Lucknow to Varanasi by car: distance, time and cab fare
Varanasi is about 320 km from Lucknow by road, typically six to seven hours via Sultanpur and Jaunpur. A chauffeur-driven sedan from RutzIndia.com costs Rs 11,520 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 18,240 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking at actual cost. Inside Varanasi, an 8 hr / 80 km sedan day is Rs 6,630 Pay Now to Reserve.
Mark Twain famously called Benares older than history. Whatever the exact age of Kashi, as devotees call it, nothing prepares you for the first sight of its ghats: a crescent of stone steps, temples and old palaces running for kilometres along the west bank of the Ganga, alive from before dawn with bathers, priests, boatmen, students and wandering cows. People come to pray, to perform last rites, to study music, to buy silk, or simply to watch life and death unfold side by side.
Most visitors fly in, but a surprising number arrive by road: families from Lucknow and Kanpur, pilgrims combining Varanasi with Ayodhya and Prayagraj, and travellers who want to see the villages of eastern Uttar Pradesh rather than the inside of a train. This guide covers the drive, how cars work in a city whose heart is closed to them, and what RutzIndia.com offers for the journey.

What makes Varanasi unforgettable
The ghats, by boat and on foot
There are more than 80 ghats. The classic way to see them is from a rowing or motor boat at first light, drifting from Assi in the south past Tulsi, Kedar, Dashashwamedh and Manikarnika. Walk them too: the stretch from Assi to Dashashwamedh takes a couple of unhurried hours and passes wrestling akharas, music schools, laundry lines and tiny shrines.
- Dashashwamedh Ghat hosts the grand Ganga Aarti every evening, with priests in unison swinging multi-tiered brass lamps. Arrive an hour early for a place on the steps, or watch from a boat.
- Assi Ghat hosts Subah-e-Banaras, a morning programme of aarti, music and yoga at sunrise.
- Manikarnika and Harishchandra are the cremation ghats. Visitors are welcome to observe quietly, but photography is not appropriate, and you should ignore anyone who demands money for "wood".
Temples
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shiva as lord of the universe, is one of the twelve jyotirlingas. The Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor now connects the temple directly to the river. Phones, bags and many items are not allowed inside; lockers are provided. Darshan timings, aarti bookings and Sugam Darshan tickets are on the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust website. Other important shrines include Kal Bhairav, the city's guardian, Sankat Mochan Hanuman, the red Durga Temple, and Tulsi Manas, where the Ramcharitmanas is inscribed on the walls.
Beyond the river
- Banaras Hindu University, a vast green campus with the New Vishwanath Temple and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum of miniature paintings and textiles.
- Ramnagar Fort, across the river, home to the former royal family and the setting for one of India's oldest Ramlila performances during the Dussehra season.
- Weavers' quarters such as Madanpura and Sarai Mohana, where Banarasi silk saris are still woven on handlooms.
- Sarnath, 12 km away, where the Buddha preached his first sermon; our Sarnath by road guide covers it.
Eating in Banaras
Mornings start with kachori-sabzi and jalebi. Afternoons are for tamatar chaat and thick lassi topped with malai. In winter, look for malaiyyo, a saffron-scented milk froth sold only in the early mornings. And of course, the Banarasi paan. The Varanasi district website lists tourist places and publishes advisories ahead of big festivals.
The drive to Varanasi, and around it
From Lucknow (about 320 km)
Most chauffeurs take the four-lane highway east through Sultanpur and on through Jaunpur, entering Varanasi from the north-west. It is a steady, mostly flat drive through wheat and mustard country, with dhabas at the larger towns. Some drivers prefer to use the Purvanchal Expressway for part of the distance before cutting across to Varanasi; the choice depends on your destination within the city and any works on the day. The expressway authority, UPEIDA, publishes route details for the state's expressways.
Budget six to seven hours with a lunch stop. Leave Lucknow by 7 am to reach your hotel in daylight, and ask the driver to plan the approach according to where you are staying, since the southern and ghat-side areas are slow to reach in the evening.
From Prayagraj and Ayodhya
Prayagraj is about 120 km west on NH19, typically two and a half to three hours; see Prayagraj by road. Ayodhya is roughly 210 km north-west via Sultanpur, and many pilgrims link the two; our Ayodhya by road guide explains that leg.
From the airport
Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur is about 25 km north-west of the city centre. A sedan transfer is Rs 3,640 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve. We track flights, meet you with a name board and allow 60 minutes of free waiting after international arrivals and 30 minutes after domestic ones.
How cars work in old Varanasi
The old city between Godowlia, Dashashwamedh and the river is a warren of lanes, and during busy periods the approach road is closed to vehicles altogether. Your driver drops you at the nearest point, usually around Godowlia or a designated parking, and you walk or take a cycle-rickshaw or e-rickshaw for the last few hundred metres. Hotels on the ghats will send porters for luggage if you ask in advance. For everything outside the old centre, BHU, Ramnagar, Sarnath, weaving areas and the airport, the car is invaluable.

When to go
October to March is the best season. The air is cool, the river calm and the light soft. December and January bring foggy mornings, which can delay flights and slow the drive from Lucknow, but also create the misty ghat scenes photographers love.
April to June is very hot, with afternoons often above 40°C. Do the ghats at dawn and after sunset. July to September is monsoon: the Ganga rises over the lower steps, the evening aarti often moves to higher platforms, and boat services may be suspended when the current is strong.
Festivals worth planning around:
- Dev Deepawali, on Kartik Purnima, about two weeks after Diwali, when the ghats are lit with countless lamps. Boats and hotels sell out months ahead, and traffic restrictions are extensive.
- Mahashivratri, with huge queues at Kashi Vishwanath and processions through the lanes.
- Ramnagar Ramlila through the Dussehra period.
- Holi, joyful and rowdy in the old city.
- Makar Sankranti and Kartik bathing days, which bring crowds to the ghats.

Pre-dawn pickup for a boat from Assi to Manikarnika at sunrise. Breakfast in the lanes, Kashi Vishwanath darshan, then the car takes you to BHU and Bharat Kala Bhavan, lunch, a weavers' workshop, and Ramnagar Fort at sunset. The 4 hr / 40 km or 8 hr / 80 km package covers this easily.

Morning at Sarnath's stupas and museum, then either return to Lucknow, continue west to Prayagraj for the Sangam, or head to the airport.
Practical tips
- Walk, do not drive, the old city. Accept it and plan around it; the driver will meet you at agreed points.
- Carry small notes for boats, rickshaws and offerings. Agree boat fares before you step in.
- Respect the cremation ghats. No photographs, modest dress, and no bargaining with self-appointed guides.
- Temple rules. At Kashi Vishwanath, leave phones and bags in the car or in lockers. Check the trust's site for current darshan and aarti arrangements.
- Monsoon caution. When the river is high, stay off the lower steps and follow boatmen's advice.
- Fog. In December and January, allow extra time for any road journey and for airport transfers.
