Varanasi to Prayagraj by car: the quick answer
Prayagraj is about 120 km west of Varanasi along NH19, typically two and a half to three hours by car. A chauffeur-driven sedan from RutzIndia.com costs Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,840 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking at actual cost. A same-day Sangam return is billed at 250 km: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.
Prayagraj, still widely known by its older name Allahabad, is one of Hinduism's holiest cities because of a single stretch of water: the Triveni Sangam, where the muddy Ganga and the greener Yamuna meet, joined in belief by the invisible Saraswati. Bathing here is considered especially meritorious, and every year the sandbanks around the confluence host the Magh Mela, and every twelve years the Kumbh, the largest gathering of people on earth.
But Prayagraj is also a university city, a seat of the High Court and a key place in India's freedom struggle, with the Nehru family home, colonial churches and a Mughal fort. By road from Varanasi, Lucknow or Ayodhya, it is an easy and rewarding addition to any eastern Uttar Pradesh journey. Here is how RutzIndia.com does it.

What to see in Prayagraj
Triveni Sangam
Boats leave from the ghats near the fort for the confluence, where wooden platforms are moored in mid-stream for bathers. The change in colour where the two rivers meet is clearly visible on a calm morning. Agree the boat fare and the number of passengers before you board, and wear clothes you do not mind getting wet if you plan a dip. Early morning, when the Siberian gulls wheel over the boats in winter, is the most atmospheric time.
Bade Hanuman Temple and Allahabad Fort
Beside the Sangam, the Bade Hanuman or Lete Hanuman temple houses a large reclining image of Hanuman below ground level; during the monsoon, the river is said to rise to touch the deity. Behind it rises the massive Allahabad Fort, built by Akbar in the 1580s. Most of it is used by the Army and is closed to the public, but the underground Patalpuri temple and the sacred Akshayavat, the "immortal" banyan, can be visited when access is open; check locally on the day.
Anand Bhawan and Swaraj Bhawan
The Nehru family home, Anand Bhawan, is now a museum preserving rooms used by Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, along with letters and photographs from the independence movement. Next door, Swaraj Bhawan was the original family house, later given to the Congress. A planetarium operates in the grounds.
Khusro Bagh and the city of gardens
Khusro Bagh is a walled Mughal garden containing three sandstone tombs, including that of Prince Khusrau, son of Jahangir. Its quiet lawns are a world away from the Sangam's bustle. Chandrashekhar Azad Park, the former Company Garden, holds the Allahabad Museum and the spot where the revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad fell in 1931.
Other highlights
- All Saints Cathedral, a Gothic Revival church in pale stone, locally called Patthar Girja.
- Alopi Devi Mandir, a Shakti Peeth where a wooden cradle, rather than an idol, is worshipped.
- Shankar Viman Mandapam, a multi-storey South Indian-style temple near the Sangam.
- New Yamuna Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge that makes a fine evening view from the riverside.
In winter, look out for Allahabadi guava sold on every corner, and start the day with kachori and sabzi in the Chowk area. The Prayagraj district website has a tourism section and posts notices for the Magh Mela.
The road from Varanasi and beyond
NH19 from Varanasi (about 120 km)
Your chauffeur leaves Varanasi on the Grand Trunk Road, National Highway 19, heading west through Raja Talab, Gopiganj and Handia before entering Prayagraj across the Ganga at Jhunsi. The six-lane highway is fast and well surfaced, with a toll plaza on the way and plenty of dhabas and fuel stations. Bhadohi, India's carpet-weaving town, is only a short detour north of Gopiganj if you want to visit a workshop. The national highway network is managed by the National Highways Authority of India; tolls are added to your bill at actual cost.
Via Mirzapur and Vindhyachal
A slower but lovely alternative runs south-west through Mirzapur to Vindhyachal, the hilltop shrine of Maa Vindhyavasini on the Ganga, and then on to Prayagraj. It adds perhaps 30 to 40 km and a couple of hours, but it turns the transfer into a pilgrimage in itself.
From Lucknow, Ayodhya and Chitrakoot
From Lucknow, Prayagraj is roughly 200 km south-east via Raebareli, about four hours. From Ayodhya it is roughly 170 km via Sultanpur and Pratapgarh; see Ayodhya by road. And from Prayagraj, the hills of Chitrakoot, associated with Ram's exile, are about 125 km south-west; our Chitrakoot by road guide covers that drive.
Arriving by air
Prayagraj airport, at Bamrauli on the western edge of the city, handles domestic flights. Many visitors instead fly into Varanasi, which has more connections, and drive to Prayagraj. We meet you at either with flight tracking, a name board, and 30 minutes of free waiting after domestic flights.

When to go: seasons, Magh Mela and Kumbh
October to March is the best time, with cool, clear mornings for boat rides. December and January can be foggy at dawn and chilly on the water; carry a shawl. April to June is hot, and midday boat rides are punishing. July to September is monsoon: the rivers swell, the Sangam platforms are often withdrawn and boat operations may be suspended on safety grounds.
The religious calendar dominates Prayagraj's travel planning:
- Magh Mela is held every year from around Makar Sankranti in January to Mahashivratri in February or March. A tent city rises on the sandbanks, and the main bathing days, such as Mauni Amavasya and Basant Panchami, draw millions.
- Kumbh Mela comes to Prayagraj every twelve years, the most recent Maha Kumbh having been held in early 2025, with an Ardh Kumbh at the halfway point.
- During the mela, the administration stops private vehicles at parking lots on the city's outskirts on major bathing days, and pilgrims walk several kilometres to the ghats. Your driver will follow the official traffic plan and set a clear pickup point.

Practical tips
- Boat fares. Fix the price and duration first, and count life jackets. On festival days fares rise sharply.
- Bathing. The Sangam has currents; stay on the platforms and hold the ropes. Carry a change of clothes in the car.
- Fort access. Parts of Allahabad Fort are an Army area. Photography restrictions apply; follow instructions at the gates.
- Mela days. Expect to walk several kilometres. Travel light, keep children close, and agree a landmark to meet your driver.
- Museum days. Anand Bhawan and the Allahabad Museum keep their own weekly closing days; check before you plan.
- Fog. Allow extra time on winter mornings, both on the highway and on the river.
