Murudeshwar by road from Goa: time, route and taxi price
Murudeshwar is about 200 km south of Goa, typically 4.5 hours on the NH66 coastal highway through Karwar, Ankola, Kumta and Honnavar. A RutzIndia.com sedan costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 11,400 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking billed at actual cost. From Udupi, about 100 km south, a sedan is Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve, the minimum trip fare.
Few pilgrimage towns announce themselves as dramatically as Murudeshwar. As the highway crests near Bhatkal, you see it: a colossal seated Shiva, among the tallest in the world, on Kanduka hill, a rocky promontory surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea. Beside it rises the modern Raja Gopura, a temple tower of around twenty storeys with a lift to a viewing gallery at the top. Below, fishing boats bob in a small bay, and the beach stretches away to the north.
Murudeshwar sits on a coastline that is best explored by car. To the north lie Gokarna's quiet beaches and ancient temple; to the south, Bhatkal, Kollur and Udupi; inland, Jog Falls and the Sharavathi valley. Trains stop here on the Konkan Railway, but the stations are small and connections limited. A chauffeur lets you link the sights at your own pace, with a driver who knows which beaches are safe, where to park near the temple and how the monsoon affects the ghats.
This guide covers the drive from Goa and from the south, what to see, the seasons, sample itineraries and our fares.

What to see in Murudeshwar and nearby
The Shiva statue and Kanduka hill. The statue, set among sculpted gardens and scenes from the legend, is visible from far along the coast. Local tradition connects the site with the Ramayana story of Ravana and the atmalinga, which also explains its link with Gokarna. The promontory is at its most beautiful in early morning and at sunset.
Murudeshwar temple and the Raja Gopura. The temple of Mrideshwara (Shiva) sits at the foot of the statue. The tall gopuram at the entrance has a lift that takes visitors up for a view across the headland and the sea; there is a small fee, and timings vary.
Murudeshwar beach. A long sandy beach north of the temple, popular with families. Swimming conditions depend on the sea; heed the lifeguards and flags.
Netrani Island. About 10 nautical miles offshore, a heart-shaped island with coral reefs, one of the better scuba-diving and snorkelling spots on India's west coast. Dive operators run trips from Murudeshwar, generally from about October to May, and not in the monsoon. Book with a reputable certified operator.
Bhatkal and the Sharavathi. Bhatkal, just south, is an old port town with Jain and Hindu temples. North at Honnavar, the Sharavathi river meets the sea through mangroves and islands; boat rides on the backwaters are peaceful.
Jog Falls. Inland from Honnavar, about 85 to 90 km from Murudeshwar, the Sharavathi plunges over a cliff in one of India's highest waterfalls. It is spectacular just after the monsoon; in the dry months the flow is controlled by the upstream dam.
Gokarna. An hour and a half north, the temple town and its beaches (Om, Kudle, Half Moon, Paradise) are a favourite with backpackers and pilgrims alike. See Gokarna by road.
The Uttara Kannada district website publishes tourist information and notices, and the Murudeshwar entry on Wikipedia gives background on the temple and statue.
The coastal drive on NH66
From Goa
From North or South Goa, the chauffeur heads to Canacona and crosses the border near Majali into Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district. The highway then runs through Karwar, with its naval base and river bridge, Ankola, Kumta and Honnavar before reaching Murudeshwar. Much of NH66 here has been upgraded to four lanes, though some river crossings and town sections remain slow. Tolls apply and are billed at actual cost.
It is one of the most scenic drives in the country: the Kali river mouth at Karwar, cashew plantations and paddy fields, and glimpses of the sea between coconut groves. Good stops include Karwar's seafront for breakfast, Kumta for a coffee break, and Honnavar for the Sharavathi views.
From Mangalore or Udupi
From Mangalore airport it is about 160 km north on NH66, through Udupi, Kundapura and Bhatkal. Many travellers do Udupi first and continue; see Udupi by road.
From Bangalore
Bangalore to Murudeshwar is a long, 9 to 10-hour drive, usually via Shivamogga and the Ghats, or via Hubballi and the Yellapur-Ankola road. Most visitors from Bangalore break the journey or fly into Goa or Mangalore.

Best time to visit
- October to March. Ideal: dry, sunny and calm. Diving at Netrani is at its best, and the beaches are safe on most days.
- April and May. Hot and humid, but good visibility for diving before the rains.
- June to September. Heavy south-west monsoon. Swimming and boat trips stop, but Jog Falls is in full flow and the countryside turns lush. Some ghat roads inland can be affected by landslips.
- Festivals. Maha Shivaratri draws huge crowds to Murudeshwar and Gokarna; Karthika month celebrations and long weekends are also busy.

The atmalinga legend that ties this coast together
To understand why Murudeshwar and Gokarna are spoken of in the same breath, it helps to know the story. In the version told along this coast, Ravana won the atmalinga, Shiva's own linga, through his penance and was carrying it home to Lanka on condition that it never touched the ground. The gods, alarmed, arranged for Ganesha, disguised as a boy, to take it from him briefly at Gokarna and set it down, where it became fixed forever. In his fury Ravana tore at the covering and cast the pieces away; one fragment is said to have landed on Kanduka hill, where the Murudeshwar shrine now stands.
Whatever you make of the legend, it shapes how pilgrims travel. Many visit Gokarna's Mahabaleshwar temple and Murudeshwar on the same trip, often adding Idagunji's Ganesha temple near Honnavar, which sits almost exactly between them. With a car, all three fit into a single unhurried day with time for a seafood lunch on the way.
Coming from Mumbai, Pune or further north
Travellers from Maharashtra increasingly drive the whole coast rather than flying. The first leg to Goa is a long day in itself; our Mumbai to Goa taxi page covers that route and its fares. From Goa, Murudeshwar is an easy half-day further south, and continuing to Udupi and Mangalore turns the journey into a week-long coastal holiday. If you prefer a single car for the whole stretch, tell the travel desk your start and end cities and we will quote a one-way long-distance fare, with night allowances for the chauffeur where needed.
Coastal itineraries by car
Two days from Goa (about 420 km). Day 1: leave Goa at 7 am, breakfast in Karwar, a stop at Kumta or Honnavar, and reach Murudeshwar for lunch. Afternoon at the temple and Raja Gopura, sunset from Kanduka hill. Day 2: an early morning on the beach or a snorkelling trip to Netrani in season, then drive back north with a stop in Gokarna.
Three days, coast to temple (about 500 km). Day 1: Goa to Gokarna. Day 2: Gokarna to Murudeshwar via Honnavar and the Sharavathi backwaters. Day 3: Murudeshwar to Udupi and Mangalore airport, with a detour to Kollur Mookambika if time allows.
With Jog Falls. Add a day inland from Honnavar to Jog Falls, particularly between August and November when the falls are in full flow.
Practical tips
- Dress code. Modest dress is expected in the temple; some inner areas require men to remove shirts.
- Parking. There is paid parking near the temple and beach; on festival days, cars are held further away and you walk.
- Beach safety. The Arabian Sea can be rough; swim only in flagged areas and never in the monsoon.
- Diving. Choose certified operators; confirm safety briefings and equipment. Non-divers can book snorkelling.
- Food. Coastal Karnataka seafood, neer dosa and fish thalis are excellent; vegetarian meals are widely available near the temple.
- Konkan railway. If you arrive by train, your chauffeur can meet you at Murudeshwar or Bhatkal station.
