Gokarna by road: a coastal drive from Goa to the temple town and Om beach

A Shiva temple older than most of Goa's churches, a sacred tank in the village square and five beaches linked by cliff paths. Gokarna is an easy, scenic run down the Karwar coast.

How do I get to Gokarna by road, and how much is the cab?

Gokarna is about 145 km south of Goa's Panaji–Margao belt, typically 3.5 hours by car on NH 66 through Karwar and Ankola. A RutzIndia.com sedan one way costs Rs 5,220 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta Rs 8,270 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking at actual cost. From Dabolim airport it is about 140 km, much the same fare.

Gokarna works on two levels. For pilgrims it is one of Karnataka's holiest towns, home to the Mahabaleshwar temple and its Atmalinga, a place where families come for rites by the sea. For everyone else it is Goa's quieter southern neighbour, with a string of coves reached by cliff paths: Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise. Both groups arrive the same way, by road, because the nearest railway station is outside town and the nearest large airports are in Goa and Hubballi.

That road is one of the prettiest on the west coast, crossing wide estuaries and skirting the Western Ghats. This guide explains how to drive it from Goa, Bangalore or Mangaluru, what to do once you arrive, how the monsoon changes things, and what RutzIndia.com charges for drops, round trips and group vehicles.

What makes Gokarna special

Mahabaleshwar temple. The legend tells of Ravana carrying Shiva's Atmalinga to Lanka, of Ganesha, disguised as a boy, tricking him into setting it down at Gokarna, and of the linga refusing to move ever since. The temple that enshrines it stands at the end of the main street a few hundred metres from the sea. Traditional dress rules apply in the inner sanctum, so ask at the entrance before you go in.

Maha Ganapati temple and Koti Teertha. A short walk from Mahabaleshwar, the Ganapati shrine honours the boy in the legend, and the Koti Teertha tank is where many pilgrims bathe and perform rites before darshan. The Car Street (Rath Beedi) that links them is lined with old houses, flower sellers and small eateries.

The beaches. Gokarna town beach is a long, working strand used for rituals and by fishermen. South of it:

  • Kudle beach, a wide bay with guesthouses and cafes, reached by a lane and steps.
  • Om beach, named for its twin coves that roughly trace the Om symbol, with road access to a parking area above, water sports in season and the most facilities.
  • Half Moon beach, a quiet crescent reached on foot from Om in about 30 minutes or by boat.
  • Paradise beach, the most remote, reached by a longer cliff trek or boat, with only basic shacks.

Around Gokarna. The laterite Mirjan Fort near Kumta, about 25 km away, is moss-covered and atmospheric. Yana, with its black limestone pinnacles in the forest, is about 50 km inland. Murudeshwar, with its towering Shiva statue on a headland, is roughly 75 km south; see our Murudeshwar road guide.

Food here is coastal Karnataka at its simplest: fish thali with kokum curry, neer dosa, banana buns at breakfast, and filter coffee in the temple lanes. The Karnataka Tourism site lists the coastal circuit and temple timings.

The road: Goa to Gokarna and other approaches

From Goa (about 145 km, 3.5 hours). From Margao the route heads south on NH 66 through Canacona, past the turn-offs for Agonda and Palolem, and crosses into Karnataka at Majali. Then comes Karwar, where the long bridge over the Kali river opens up views of the estuary and Rabindranath Tagore beach, followed by Ankola. A few kilometres beyond, the road to Gokarna branches off towards the coast. Much of NH 66 here has been widened to four lanes; some stretches through villages and over the hill sections remain slower. From North Goa add an hour. If you are travelling from the Palolem side, our South Goa guide is a good companion.

From Bangalore (about 480 km, 9 to 10 hours). The usual route is NH 48 to Hubballi, then west through the ghat to Ankola, or via Sirsi and Kumta for a more forested line. Start early to cross the ghat in daylight.

From Mangaluru or Udupi (about 230 km, 5 hours). Straight up NH 66 through Kundapura, Bhatkal and Murudeshwar, a coastal run with river crossings every few kilometres. Our Udupi guide covers the southern end.

From Hampi (about 330 km, 7 hours). A long-standing traveller favourite pairing, via Hosapete and Hubballi.

Fuel is plentiful on NH 66. Good food stops are the highway restaurants at Karwar and Ankola; stop at the Kali bridge viewpoint if the light is good.

When to go

October to March is the season. The monsoon has cleared, the sea calms and the cliff paths dry out. December and January are busiest, particularly at Om and Kudle around Christmas and New Year, when guesthouses fill and parking above Om beach is tight.

Maha Shivaratri (February or March) is Gokarna's great festival, with a large chariot procession along the Car Street and crowds of pilgrims; plan a day either side if you only want the beaches.

April and May are hot and humid but still pleasant by the water in the early morning. From June to September the monsoon is heavy on this coast: most beach shacks close, swimming is unsafe and the cliff paths become slippery, though the temple town carries on and the green landscape is striking. Check the district's notices on the Uttara Kannada district website for any beach or road advisories during heavy rain.

Fares are before 5% GST. Tolls, state entry or permit charges for commercial vehicles crossing from Goa into Karnataka, and parking are added at actual cost. Round trips are billed on the greater of the actual distance or 250 km per calendar day, and the driver's night allowance is Rs 1,500 per night on overnight trips. If you keep the car in Gokarna for a night, the driver will also cover the short hops between town, Kudle and the Om beach parking, so there is no need to bargain with autos for each ride. Travellers flying in can have the driver meet them at Dabolim or Mopa with a name board; we track the flight and allow 30 minutes of free waiting after domestic arrivals and 60 minutes after international ones before waiting time is charged at the hourly rate.

Every vehicle in the fleet is within four model years. Book online and pay by card or UPI; group organisers and companies receive a GST invoice. Free cancellation applies until 72 hours before departure; then 10% is charged inside 72 hours, 50% inside 48 hours and 100% inside 24 hours or for a no-show. Full terms are on the cancellation policy page, and our fares page lists every vehicle class.

A two-day Gokarna trip by car

Day 1: Goa to Gokarna (about 150 km). Leave South Goa by 8 am, stop at the Kali bridge and Karwar's beach for a coffee, and reach Gokarna by late morning. Visit Koti Teertha, the Maha Ganapati temple and Mahabaleshwar before the midday closure, then lunch on a thali in the Car Street. In the afternoon the driver takes you up to the Om beach parking; walk down, swim if the flags allow, and watch the sunset from the headland.

Day 2: Beaches and back (about 170 km). An early walk from Om to Half Moon beach while it is cool, a boat back, then check out and drive to Mirjan Fort near Kumta for an hour among the laterite walls. Return north to Goa for dinner. Add a third day for Yana and the Vibhooti falls inland, or continue south to Murudeshwar.

For a longer coastal and forest circuit, combine Gokarna with the river town of Dandeli, about 150 km inland, or finish in North Goa, described in our North Goa guide.

Practical tips for Gokarna

  • Parking. The temple lanes are too narrow for cars. Your driver drops you at the edge of the old town and parks in the open areas near the main beach. At Om beach there is paid parking at the top of the access road.
  • Cliff paths. The trails between Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise are rocky and unlit. Walk them in daylight with proper footwear and plenty of water.
  • Sea safety. Currents can be strong. Swim only where lifeguards are posted, and not at all in the monsoon.
  • Temple etiquette. Remove footwear, dress modestly and follow instructions about photography and the sanctum dress code.
  • Cash. ATMs exist in town but can run dry on festival days; carry some cash for small shacks and boat rides.
  • Local taxis. Autos and local taxis run the short hops between town and the beaches. Your RutzIndia.com car is with you for the day, so there is no need to negotiate.

For flights into Goa before the drive, read about Goa airport taxi meet-and-greet, and see taxi service in Goa for local hire on the Goa side.
