How do I reach Dandeli by road from Goa?
Dandeli is about 120 km east of Goa, typically a three-hour drive through Ponda and Mollem and over the Anmod ghat into Karnataka. A RutzIndia.com sedan one way costs Rs 4,350 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta Rs 7,620 Pay Now to Reserve, the Goa minimum fares, before 5% GST, with tolls, state entry charges and parking at actual cost. From Hubballi airport it is about 75 km.
Dandeli is a small paper-mill town on the Kali river that has quietly become one of South India's favourite adventure weekends. The river runs fast through a gorge of teak and bamboo forest, the surrounding hills form part of the Kali Tiger Reserve, and a string of camps and homestays along the banks offer rafting, kayaking, coracle rides and jungle walks. For Goa-based travellers it is the perfect counterweight to the beach: a morning's drive delivers you into forest so thick that the midday light turns green.
There is no practical rail link and no airport in town, so the road trip is the trip. This guide covers the drive from Goa, Hubballi, Belagavi, Pune and Bangalore, what to do in and around Dandeli, the rafting season and the monsoon, and what RutzIndia.com charges for one-way drops, weekend round trips and group vehicles.

Rafting, hornbills and the forest: why go
White water on the Kali. Dandeli is best known for rafting on a stretch of the Kali with rapids suitable for beginners and small groups, run by licensed operators including the Karnataka government's Jungle Lodges and Resorts, whose Kali Adventure Camp sits on the riverbank. Water levels depend on releases from the dams upstream, so rafting schedules change from week to week; confirm with your operator before you drive. Shorter, gentler options include kayaking, coracle rides and a float down the calmer sections.
Wildlife. The forests around Dandeli belong to the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, now part of the wider Kali Tiger Reserve. Sightings of tigers are rare, but the area is famous among birders for great, Malabar pied and Malabar grey hornbills, and for the occasional black panther. Forest department jeep safaris run at set times from the town side; ask your camp to reserve a seat.
Syntheri rocks. About 25 km from town, a huge monolith of limestone rises from the Kaneri river in a gorge full of swifts and rock bees; a flight of steps takes you down to the water's edge.
Kavala caves and Ulavi. The Kavala caves, with a natural stone formation revered as a Shiva linga, involve a steep climb down many steps from a forest road. Ulavi, further into the reserve, is a pilgrimage centre with the Channabasaveshwara temple and a big annual fair.
Supa dam and waterfalls. The Supa reservoir upstream is a quiet drive, and in the weeks just after the monsoon the Sathodi and Magod falls near Yellapur, about an hour and a half away, make a fine day out.
Evenings in Dandeli are about campfires, bonfire dinners and the sound of the river. Local food is North Karnataka in style: jolada rotti (jowar flatbread), ennegai brinjal curry and spicy chutneys, often served alongside Goan and coastal dishes at the camps. The Karnataka Tourism site lists the forest and river experiences in Uttara Kannada.
The drive to Dandeli: Goa and other starting points
From Goa (about 120 km, 3 hours). The route runs east from Panaji or Margao through Ponda and Mollem, where the road enters the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary and climbs the Anmod ghat. At the top you cross into Karnataka near Ramnagar and then drop south through the forest to Dandeli. The ghat is steep and winding with occasional repair works and restrictions on heavy vehicles; in daylight and dry weather it is a beautiful drive. Wildlife crossings are common, so speed limits in the forest are low and enforced. From North Goa add about an hour.
Alternative via Karwar (about 160 km from Margao). Down NH 66 to Karwar, then inland along the Kali valley past Kadra and its reservoirs. Longer, but a good choice when the Anmod ghat is under repair, and it lets you combine the trip with Gokarna.
From Hubballi (about 75 km, 2 hours) and Belagavi (about 90 km, 2.5 hours). Hubballi's airport is the nearest with regular domestic flights; the road runs through Haliyal on good two-lane state highways.
From Pune (about 440 km, 8 to 9 hours) via Satara, Kolhapur and Belagavi on NH 48, then west through Khanapur or Haliyal. From Bangalore (about 470 km, 9 hours) via Tumakuru, Davanagere and Hubballi, also on NH 48.
Fuel up at Ponda or Haliyal; there are pumps in Dandeli town but fewer choices in the forest. Mobile coverage fades in patches inside the reserve, so agree meeting points with your driver in advance.

When to visit Dandeli
October to February is ideal: cool nights, green forest after the rains, full rivers and the rafting season in swing. March to May is warmer but still pleasant in the forest shade; this is the best time for wildlife, because animals gather near the remaining water, and many consider the rafting at its most reliable in these months, subject to dam releases.
The monsoon, roughly June to September, is spectacular for scenery and waterfalls, but white-water rafting is usually suspended for safety and forest safaris may close. Some camps stay open for monsoon stays with coracle rides and walks. The Anmod ghat can see landslips in heavy rain, so give yourself extra time or use the Karwar route.
Weekends and long holidays, particularly Christmas, New Year and the Diwali break, fill the camps quickly with groups from Goa, Pune, Belagavi and Bangalore. Book the stay first, then the car.

A weekend in Dandeli by car
Day 1: Goa to Dandeli (about 140 km with detours). Leave Goa at 7 am, breakfast in Ponda, and climb the Anmod ghat in the cool of the morning. Check in at your riverside camp by 11, raft or kayak before lunch if the water is right, then drive to Syntheri rocks in the afternoon when the gorge is at its most photogenic. Bonfire dinner at camp.
Day 2: Forest and home (about 150 km). Dawn birding walk or the forest department jeep safari, breakfast, then the Supa dam viewpoint or the Kavala caves, and an early afternoon departure so the ghat is behind you before dark. Back in Goa by early evening.
Extending to three days. Add a morning at Ulavi and an afternoon at the Sathodi falls near Yellapur, or leave Dandeli southwards and finish the trip on the coast at Gokarna. Pune and Bangalore travellers can extend north to Kolhapur or east to Hampi.
Practical tips for Dandeli
- Rafting rules. Operators set minimum ages and require life jackets and helmets; follow their instructions and wear quick-dry clothes and sandals with straps.
- Forest etiquette. No music from the car, no feeding animals, no stopping in marked no-halt zones. Drivers observe forest speed limits, which are there because of wildlife crossings.
- Leeches and insects. In and just after the monsoon, carry leech socks, salt and repellent.
- Parking. Camps have their own parking. At Syntheri and the Kavala caves, parking is in forest-department areas with a small fee.
- Connectivity. Expect patchy signal in the reserve; download maps and keep your camp's landline or WhatsApp contact saved.
- Night driving. Avoid driving the ghat or forest roads after dark; plan departures so you are out of the forest by sunset.
- What to pack. A change of clothes for after rafting, a dry bag for phones, a light fleece for December nights, binoculars for the hornbills, a torch for walking around camp and cash for activity fees, which some operators still prefer over cards.
- Children and older travellers. Coracle rides, the Syntheri steps and gentle nature walks suit most ages; the Kavala caves climb is strenuous and best skipped by anyone with knee trouble.
