Getting to Fort Kochi by car: the short answer
Fort Kochi is about 12 km from Ernakulam's MG Road and about 45 km from Cochin International Airport, typically 30 to 45 minutes and 1.5 hours by car respectively. A chauffeur-driven sedan transfer costs from Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta from Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. A full 8 hr / 80 km heritage day costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.
Fort Kochi is the old harbour quarter at the tip of the peninsula where the Arabian Sea meets the backwaters, and it holds more layers of history per square kilometre than almost anywhere in India. Arab and Chinese traders came here for pepper long before Europeans; the Portuguese built the first European fort in India here in the early sixteenth century; the Dutch took it in the seventeenth, and the British in the eighteenth. Next door, Mattancherry grew around a spice market, a palace of the Kochi rajas and one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth. Walk its lanes today and you pass Portuguese churches, Dutch bungalows, British clubs, Gujarati and Konkani temples, mosques, Jain temples and a Jewish quarter, all within a few minutes of one another.
It is, above all, a place for walking. The car's job is to get you there from the airport, the city or a cruise terminal, to carry you between the two ends of the district when the midday heat makes walking unpleasant, and to take you onward to the backwaters and the hills. This guide covers the routes, what to see, how the local packages work and RutzIndia.com's fares. Book online whenever you are ready.

Routes into Fort Kochi
From Ernakulam (about 12 km, 30 to 45 minutes). From MG Road or Marine Drive, the road heads south and west across the Venduruthy and Thoppumpady bridges, passing Willingdon Island and the naval base, and enters the old quarter through Mattancherry. Office hours and evenings are slow on the bridges; mid-morning is best.
From Cochin International Airport (about 45 km, 1.5 hours). The airport at Nedumbassery is north of the city, so the drive passes through Aluva and Ernakulam or uses the Kundannoor bypass. Flight information is on the CIAL website. Your chauffeur meets you at the arrivals exit with a name board and tracks the flight; the first 30 minutes after a domestic arrival and the first 60 minutes after an international one are free, and hourly waiting applies after that. Airport transfers to Fort Kochi are priced at our Kochi airport-transfer fare from Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, and the desk confirms the exact figure for your hotel when you book; our Kochi airport taxi page lists every vehicle class.
From Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town railway stations (about 12 to 14 km). The same short-transfer fare applies.
From the cruise terminal on Willingdon Island. Cruise passengers often have a single day ashore. A 4 hr / 40 km or 8 hr / 80 km package is the easiest way to see Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and perhaps a short backwater trip before the ship sails.
By water. Kochi's ferries and the Water Metro connect Fort Kochi with Ernakulam and the islands, a pleasant way to arrive; the car can carry luggage round by road. For the city's rail and water networks, see Kochi Metro.
What to see in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
The Chinese fishing nets. Huge cantilevered nets on teak frames line the shore near Vasco da Gama Square, lowered and raised by teams of fishermen. Sunset here, with the nets silhouetted against the sky, is the image of Fort Kochi.
St Francis Church. One of the oldest European churches in India, where Vasco da Gama was buried in 1524 before his remains were taken back to Portugal. His gravestone is still in the floor.
Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica. A grand, colourful basilica with painted ceilings, a few minutes' walk from St Francis.
Mattancherry Palace (the Dutch Palace). Built by the Portuguese for the raja of Kochi and later renovated by the Dutch, it houses remarkable Kerala murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana and portraits of the Kochi rulers. As a centrally protected monument it is looked after by the ASI, whose official website lists visiting rules for protected sites. The palace is typically closed on Fridays.
The Paradesi Synagogue and Jew Town. Built in the sixteenth century, the synagogue is famous for its hand-painted Chinese floor tiles and Belgian chandeliers. It is generally closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays, so plan accordingly. The street around it is lined with antique shops, spice traders and cafes.
The spice warehouses. Old godowns along Bazaar Road in Mattancherry still trade in pepper, ginger, cardamom and turmeric, and some have been turned into galleries and cafes.
Princess Street, the Dutch cemetery and the beach promenade. Colonial bungalows, small boutique hotels and art spaces line the old streets; the promenade along Fort Kochi beach is lively at dusk.
Kathakali and Kalaripayattu. Several small theatres hold nightly performances, with the elaborate make-up applied in view of the audience beforehand.
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale. When the contemporary art biennale is running (it has typically opened in December and run for several months), old warehouses and heritage buildings across Fort Kochi and Mattancherry become exhibition spaces, and the whole district fills with visitors.
For official district information, events and notices, see the Ernakulam district portal.
The food is as layered as the history: fresh seafood from the nets, grilled to order at the stalls nearby, Kerala Christian dishes such as duck roast and fish molee, Jewish-influenced baking, Konkani vegetarian meals in Mattancherry and excellent coffee in the heritage cafes.

Best time to visit Fort Kochi
- October to March is the most comfortable season, sunny and warm with cooler evenings, and the peak for cruise ships and the art season.
- New Year's Eve brings the Cochin Carnival, when crowds gather on the beach and the giant effigy of Pappanji is burnt at midnight. Traffic into Fort Kochi is heavily regulated that night; plan to arrive early and stay put.
- April and May are hot and humid; sightsee in the morning and late afternoon.
- June to September is monsoon: heavy showers, fewer tourists, lush gardens and moody seascapes. The fishing nets work less in rough weather.
- Onam (August or September) and Christmas bring decorations, music and full hotels.

Staying in Fort Kochi
Heritage hotels in restored bungalows and warehouses, homestays in family houses and small guesthouses line the old streets, and many sit on lanes too narrow for a car to stop outside. Expect a short walk from wherever the car can safely stop; your chauffeur carries the bags to the gate. Staying in Fort Kochi rather than Ernakulam means you can walk the district at dawn and dusk, the loveliest times, and use the car only for longer trips.
Practical tips for Fort Kochi
- Check closure days: Mattancherry Palace and the synagogue are both usually closed on Fridays, and the synagogue on Saturdays too.
- Dress modestly for churches, temples and the synagogue.
- Parking is limited in the heritage lanes; agree pickup points with your driver.
- Carry water and a hat; the old quarter has little shade at midday.
- Bargain politely in the antique shops, and ask for certificates for anything genuinely old.
- If plans change, cancelling costs nothing until 72 hours before pickup; after that the charge is 10% of the fare, rising to half inside 48 hours and the whole fare inside 24 hours or for a no-show, as set out in our cancellation policy.
