Alleppey by road from Kochi: the essentials
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is about 55 km south of Kochi on NH66, typically 1.5 hours by car via Aroor and Cherthala. At that distance each class is billed at its floor price (minimum fare applies): Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve for a sedan and Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve for an Innova Crysta, before 5% GST. The 85 km run from Cochin airport to the jetties is the same Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan. Tolls and parking are charged at actual cost.
Alleppey is where Kerala meets the water. The town sits on a narrow strip between the Arabian Sea and the vast Vembanad lake system, and inland of it lies Kuttanad, a patchwork of paddy fields, dykes and canals where farmers grow rice below sea level. Colonial-era canals once earned the town the nickname Venice of the East, and today its great attraction is the kettuvallam, the old rice barge reborn as a thatched houseboat that drifts through the backwaters while a cook prepares lunch on board.
Getting to the jetty is the easy part: a short run down the coast highway. The planning challenge is fitting the car around the boat. Houseboats keep fixed check-in and check-out times, cruising stops at dusk, and the boat drops you somewhere different from where it picked you up more often than you might expect. This guide explains how to structure the trip so that your RutzIndia.com car is waiting exactly when and where you need it, and what it costs. You can book online once your houseboat is confirmed.

Why Alleppey deserves a proper stay
- The houseboat. An overnight cruise on the backwaters is the defining Kerala experience. The boats range from simple one-bedroom craft to large multi-bedroom vessels with upper decks, and the day moves at the pace of the water: coconut groves, village churches and temples on the banks, kingfishers, ducks herded along the canals and the evening glow over the paddy.
- Canoe and shikara rides. The big houseboats stick to the wider channels. To see village life up close, take a small canoe into the narrow canals around Kainakary or Champakulam for a couple of hours.
- Kuttanad's rice bowl. The below-sea-level farming here is unusual worldwide, with fields protected by embankments and pumped dry for planting. Drives along the Alappuzha to Changanassery road give a good sense of it.
- Alappuzha beach, the old pier and the lighthouse. The beach is a lively evening spot for local families, and the lighthouse offers a view over the town and coast.
- Marari beach. About 15 km north, a quieter stretch of sand lined with homestays and resorts, popular with guests who want sea as well as backwaters.
- Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna temple. South of town, famous for its palpayasam, a sweet rice pudding offered to the deity.
- Food. Karimeen (pearl spot) fried or cooked in a banana leaf, duck roast, prawn and crab curries, tapioca with fish curry, appam and stew. The traditional toddy shops serve some of the spiciest and most authentic food in the district; ask your driver for a family-friendly one.
The official Kerala tourism board publishes a helpful guide to houseboat cruises, including how to choose an operator approved by the department.
The drive: NH66 from Kochi, and from the airport
From Ernakulam the road runs south across the Kundannoor junction and the Aroor bridge onto NH66, the coastal highway that links Kochi with Thiruvananthapuram. Through Aroor, Thuravoor and Cherthala it passes a continuous line of towns, churches and coconut groves; it is rarely empty, and the ongoing highway widening has created diversions on several stretches. Expect about 1.5 hours to central Alleppey, more at school and office times.
- From Fort Kochi, your driver will cross via Thoppumpady and join the highway at Kundannoor or Aroor; the distance is similar.
- From Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, allow about 2.5 hours for the roughly 85 km through Aluva and Ernakulam. The CIAL website has live flight status, and our chauffeur watches it too, meeting you at arrivals with a name board. Domestic arrivals get half an hour of free waiting and international ones a full hour; beyond that, waiting is billed at the hourly rate.
- From Kumarakom, on the opposite shore of Vembanad, the road around the lake takes about 1.5 hours; many guests cross by boat and let the car meet them. Our guide to Kumarakom by road explains that option.
There are no ghat sections; the only hazards are traffic, occasional flooding on low roads during heavy monsoon rain and slow bridges over the canals.

Fitting the car around the houseboat
This is where most first-time plans go wrong, so here is how our drivers suggest you organise it:
- Check-in is usually around noon, and check-out the following morning around 9 am. Confirm the exact times and the jetty with your houseboat operator.
- Cruising generally stops around dusk. Boats anchor for the night, and you continue in the morning. You will not be sailing through the night.
- Ask where the boat will drop you. Many boats start and end at the same jetty near Punnamada or the Finishing Point, but some finish elsewhere. Tell us the drop point and we will meet you there.
- Book the car one way twice, not as a round trip. An overnight houseboat means you do not need the car in between. Two one-way transfers of about 55 km each (Rs 3,960 each in a sedan, the minimum fare) cost far less than keeping a car for two days on the 250 km per day round-trip minimum. Our one-way taxi pricing makes this simple.
- Doing a day cruise only? A same-day round trip from Kochi is billed on the 250 km minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, and includes the car waiting for you all day.
Seasons, rain and the snake boat races
- September to March is the peak season: post-monsoon greenery, then clear, warm days from November. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks; book the houseboat months ahead.
- April and May are hot and humid, but houseboats with air-conditioned bedrooms remain comfortable at night, and rates are lower.
- June to August brings the monsoon. Rain on the backwaters is beautiful and atmospheric, and prices drop sharply. Low-lying roads in Kuttanad can flood after very heavy rain, so keep plans flexible.
- The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held on Punnamada Lake on the second Saturday of August in most years, is the most famous of Kerala's snake-boat races, with long chundan vallams rowed by crews of a hundred or more. Tickets, dates and announcements are published on the official Nehru Trophy Boat Race site. Traffic into Alleppey on race day is extremely heavy; leave very early.
- Onam in August or September brings festivities and more boat races around the district.
The Alappuzha district portal carries official flood advisories during the monsoon.

Two sample plans
Classic houseboat overnight (two one-way transfers, about 110 km).
- Day 1: 9:30 am pickup in Kochi, a stop at Marari beach for a swim and early lunch, then the jetty by noon for houseboat check-in. The car returns to Kochi.
- Day 2: houseboat breakfast, check-out around 9 am, pickup at the drop jetty, a canoe ride in the Kainakary canals, lunch at a toddy shop and the drive back to Kochi or on to the airport.
Three days, backwaters and beach (billed on the 750 km minimum). Houseboat night one, a morning canoe ride and Ambalappuzha temple, then south along NH66 to Varkala for two nights. Read our Varkala by road guide for the cliff town.
Houseboat or lakeside resort?
If you are travelling with very young children, elderly parents or anyone who dislikes being on water for a long stretch, consider a lakeside resort near Punnamada or on the Kuttanad side with a day cruise instead. You still get the backwaters, but with a fixed bed on land and the car on call. The fares for this pattern are the same one-way and day-trip rates shown above.
Practical tips
- Choose an approved houseboat operator, check that the boat has life jackets, and confirm what meals are included.
- Pack light. Houseboat cabins are compact; a soft bag is easier than a hard suitcase. Your driver can keep excess luggage only if the car is waiting for you, so plan accordingly.
- Mosquito repellent is essential in the evening on the water.
- Jetty parking is crowded around noon; your driver will drop you as close as possible.
- Plan for delays on NH66 because of the highway works.
- Cancellations: free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on no-show. See our cancellation policy.
Before or after the backwaters, the tea country waits: see Munnar by road, and for local hire back in the city, our Kochi taxi service and Kochi airport taxi pages have fixed fares.
