How far is Damdama Lake by road, and what does a cab cost?
Damdama Lake lies near Sohna, about 60 km from central Delhi and 25 to 30 km from Gurgaon's Cyber City, typically 1.5 to 2 hours from Delhi via NH48 or the Sohna elevated road. A chauffeur-driven sedan drop costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve; a full day from Gurgaon costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, before 5% GST.
Most people in the NCR have heard of Damdama; fewer have actually been, and even fewer have seen it at its best. When the monsoon has filled it, the lake spreads wide beneath rocky, scrub-covered spurs of the Aravalli range, egrets stalk the edges and the adventure camps along the shore run kayaks and ziplines all weekend. In a dry May, by contrast, the water can shrink to a fraction of its size. Knowing when to go, and how to get there without fighting Sohna Road traffic, is the difference between a lovely day and a long drive to a dusty field.
RutzIndia.com runs Damdama drops, day trips and group transfers from anywhere in Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Noida. Our chauffeurs know the approach through Sohna, the turn-off to the lake and where cars can wait near the resorts. This guide covers why to go, the road, the season, what the trip costs and how to plan it, whether you are a couple looking for a quiet lunch or an HR team organising an offsite for 40 people. You can book online once you have picked a date.

What makes Damdama worth the drive
The lake itself. Damdama is a reservoir held back by an earthen embankment, fed by rainwater running off the surrounding Aravalli hills. It is among the larger natural-looking water bodies in Haryana's part of the NCR, and on a clear morning after rain the reflections of the ridge in the water are genuinely beautiful. Boating is available when water levels allow.
Adventure camps. Several private camps around the lake offer rock climbing, rappelling, ziplines, rope courses, ATV rides and, when there is enough water, kayaking. These are popular for school groups, college trips and corporate team days; book activities directly with the camp.
Resorts and a slower pace. Weekend resorts, many with pools and lawns, cluster along the approach roads. They are a common choice for small weddings, birthday parties and company offsites, because guests can drive back to Delhi the same evening.
Birds. In winter the shallows attract cormorants, herons, egrets, ducks and waders, and the dry scrub on the hills holds peafowl, grey francolins and the odd raptor. It is not a formal sanctuary like Sultanpur, but birders who combine the two on a winter weekend see a good spread of species.
Sohna. The small town just north of the lake is known for its sulphur hot springs and old temple tanks, and it sits at the start of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. A short stop there adds some history to the day.
Haryana Tourism operates a tourist complex at the lake with food and basic facilities; the state tourism website lists its properties and contacts, and the Haryana page on Incredible India gives background on the region.
The road to Damdama
From Gurgaon (25 to 30 km). The fastest route is the Gurugram-Sohna elevated road, which lifts you over the busiest stretch of Sohna Road, then on through Sohna town to the lake turn-off. Allow 40 minutes to an hour depending on the hour.
From South Delhi (about 55 to 65 km). Take the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road or NH48 into Gurgaon, then Golf Course Extension Road or Sohna Road south. Early on a Saturday morning, the drive from Saket or Vasant Kunj takes about 75 minutes; on a weekday evening it can take more than two hours.
From Faridabad (about 35 to 45 km). The Faridabad-Gurgaon road across the Aravalli ridge links the two cities; from there turn south towards Sohna. This is a scenic drive through forested hills but can be slow near the toll and at the Gurgaon end.
From Noida (about 80 km). Cross via the DND and Kalindi Kunj, then take the Faridabad road or the Ring Road to NH48. Our Noida and Greater Noida by road guide explains the eastern side of the region.
The last few kilometres from the Sohna side are a narrower road past fields and village houses, with speed breakers and the occasional tractor. On resort weekends, traffic backs up near the popular gates in the afternoon. Chauffeurs drop guests at the entrance and wait in the resort parking or a nearby open area. For road closures and local notices, the Gurugram district website is the official source.

Best time to go: water, weather and crowds
- August to October: the best months for the lake itself. The monsoon has usually filled it, the hills are green and boating and kayaking are most likely to be running. Roads can be muddy near the lake after heavy showers.
- November to February: pleasant, sunny days and cool evenings, perfect for picnics, adventure activities and winter birds. Mornings can be foggy in December and January.
- March: warm days, still comfortable before noon; water levels begin to fall.
- April to June: hot, with daytime temperatures often above 40 degrees, and the lake can shrink sharply or dry out in a weak rain year. Resorts with pools stay busy; the lake does not.
Long weekends, Holi and the week between Christmas and New Year bring the heaviest crowds. If you want quiet, go on a weekday or arrive before 9 am on a Saturday.

Two ways to plan the day
A relaxed lake day from Delhi (about 130 km in all).
- Leave South Delhi at 7:30 am, stopping for breakfast in Gurgaon or Sohna.
- Reach the lake by about 9:30; walk the embankment while it is cool and take a boat if water levels allow.
- Lunch at the tourist complex or a resort.
- Afternoon stop at Sohna's hot spring and temple tank.
- Head back by 4 pm to beat the evening rush on Sohna Road.
An adventure day for a group (about 70 km from Gurgaon). Pickup from the office at 8 am in a Tempo Traveller or mini bus, a morning of climbing, rappelling and ziplines at a lakeside camp, lunch and team sessions on the lawns, and back in Gurgaon by 6 pm.
Turn it into a weekend. Stay a night at a Damdama resort, then continue on the second day about 120 km south-west through Nuh to Alwar and the Sariska reserve; our Alwar and Sariska by road guide covers that drive. Or head west to Neemrana's hilltop fort; see Neemrana by road.
Practical tips for Damdama Lake
- Check the water before you go. In a dry year, the lake may be low from April until the rains. Ask the resort or camp about current levels and whether boating is running.
- Book activities directly with the adventure camp and confirm safety gear and age limits for children.
- Carry cash for small vendors and parking; card acceptance around the lake is patchy.
- Sun and heat: there is little shade on the embankment. Hats, sunscreen and water are essential outside winter.
- Drones and swimming: avoid both unless the operator explicitly permits them; the lake has uneven depths.
- Leave early, return early: Sohna Road and the Gurgaon end of the elevated road clog up after 5 pm on weekdays and after 6 pm on Sundays.
