How to reach Pahalgam by road from Srinagar
Pahalgam is about 95 km from Srinagar, typically 2.5 to 3 hours via Pampore, Awantipora and Anantnag, then up the Lidder valley. One way, the class minimum fare applies, so a sedan with chauffeur costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve and the Innova Crysta Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve, GST of 5% extra. A same-day return is billed on the 250 km day minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.
Pahalgam, the "village of shepherds", sits where the East and West Lidder streams meet at about 2,100 metres, surrounded by pine-clad slopes and high meadows where Gujjar and Bakarwal herders bring their flocks each summer. It is the gentlest and most family-friendly of Kashmir's resorts: the river runs through the middle of town, the air smells of pine resin, and the side valleys of Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari are each a short drive away. It is also the base for the Amarnath Yatra's traditional route.
Because Pahalgam has its own well-organised taxi union, planning a trip here is slightly different from other hill stations, and getting it right saves both money and irritation. This guide explains the drive, the sights along the way and in the valley, the local-taxi rules, the seasons and what RutzIndia.com charges. For a full valley itinerary, our Kashmir taxi service page brings everything together.

On the way: the most interesting 95 km in the valley
The drive is as rewarding as the destination, and a good chauffeur will make time for the stops.
- Pampore (about 15 km from Srinagar). The saffron town of Kashmir. In late October and early November the karewa plateaus turn violet with crocus flowers; the rest of the year, roadside shops sell saffron, dry fruit and kahwa.
- Awantipora (about 30 km). The ruins of the Avantiswami and Avantishvara temples, built in the 9th century by King Avantivarman, stand right beside the highway and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
- Sangam and Bijbehara (about 45 km). The lanes here are lined with workshops making cricket bats from Kashmir willow. Watching clefts being seasoned and shaped is a favourite stop for families with children.
- Anantnag and Mattan (about 55 to 65 km). A short detour leads to the Martand Sun Temple, the grandest ancient ruin in Kashmir, on a plateau with views of the valley, and to the sacred springs at Mattan.
- Aishmuqam (about 75 km). The Sufi shrine of Zain-ud-Din Wali sits on a hill above the road as the valley narrows.
- The Lidder valley (last 20 km). The road follows the river through pine forest, past trout streams and meadows, into Pahalgam town.
What to do in and around Pahalgam
Betaab Valley (about 15 km). A wide green meadow beside the Lidder, named after the Hindi film shot here, with the river clear and cold over grey boulders. A classic picnic spot.
Aru Valley (about 12 km). A village and alpine meadow at the head of a side valley, base for treks to the Kolahoi glacier and Tarsar lake. Quiet, beautiful and good for an easy walk.
Chandanwari (about 16 km). The starting point of the Amarnath Yatra's Pahalgam route, and in early summer often still banked with snow. Snow play and sledge rides are offered here in season.
Baisaran and the high meadows. Pine-fringed meadows above town reached only on foot or by pony. Access to some meadows is regulated by the authorities and can be restricted at times, so check locally before you plan around them.
In town. A walk along the Lidder, the old Mamleshwar temple across the river, golf on the Pahalgam course and trout fishing on licensed beats (a fishing permit is required from the fisheries department) fill a relaxed afternoon.
The Anantnag district administration, which covers Pahalgam, lists visitor information on the Anantnag district website.

The Pahalgam taxi-union rule, explained
This is the single most important thing to know. Outside vehicles, including cars from Srinagar or Jammu, are generally not allowed to take tourists to Aru, Betaab Valley or Chandanwari. These runs are operated by Pahalgam's local taxi union from its stand in town, at displayed rates, often as a combined package for all three points.
How it works on a RutzIndia.com trip:
- Your chauffeur drives you from Srinagar to your hotel or to the union taxi stand in Pahalgam.
- You hire a union taxi for Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari and pay the driver directly at the posted rate.
- Your car waits in town, or you stay the night and your chauffeur collects you the next morning.
Ponies for Baisaran and the meadows are similarly licensed with fixed rates. It feels like an extra step, but it keeps local livelihoods going, and the union drivers know the narrow valley roads intimately.
When to go: seasons and the Amarnath Yatra
- April to June: fresh green valleys, snow still on the peaks and at Chandanwari. Pleasant days, cold nights. Ideal for families.
- July and August: the Amarnath Yatra runs from Chandanwari, bringing heavy but orderly movement, security convoys and busy hotels. Pilgrims must register with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board; details and dates are published on the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board website. If you are not on the yatra, plan around its peak weeks.
- September and October: clear skies, early autumn colours and fewer visitors. Arguably the best time.
- November to March: snowfall closes the higher side roads and many hotels shut; Pahalgam town itself stays accessible most of the winter, but Aru and Chandanwari may be cut off.

Where to stay and how the evening works
Pahalgam's hotels are strung along both banks of the Lidder and up the Aru and Chandanwari roads. The riverside properties close to the town centre are the most convenient for walks and restaurants; those a little further up the valley are quieter, with views of the pine slopes and the sound of the water all night. Government tourist huts and simple guesthouses cater to tighter budgets, and a few larger resorts offer heated rooms and lawns running down to the river.
Book the room first and share the name with us, since some properties sit on steep private approach roads where a larger vehicle needs to turn carefully. Most hotels have parking and drivers' accommodation, which the night allowance on your invoice covers.
Evenings are for the market lanes, where you can buy walnut-wood souvenirs and woollens, and for dinner of Kashmiri staples: rista, gushtaba, nadru (lotus stem) and trout from the local hatcheries. By nine the town is asleep, and on clear nights the stars over the Lidder are remarkable. If you are flying home from Srinagar, leave Pahalgam early the next morning; allow at least four hours from hotel to airport in the summer season, and see our airport taxi page for how pickups and drops are planned.
Suggested plans: a day, two days or three
One day from Srinagar (about 200 km). Leave at 7.30 am. Saffron shops at Pampore and the Avantiswami ruins at Awantipora, a bat workshop at Sangam, lunch in Pahalgam, then a union taxi to Betaab Valley and Aru for the afternoon. Back in Srinagar by 8 pm.
Two days (about 220 km). Add the Martand Sun Temple on the way up and stay overnight by the river. Day 2: Chandanwari in the morning by union taxi, a walk to the Mamleshwar temple, and a slow drive back.
Three days, the southern valley. Combine Pahalgam with a night in Srinagar and a day at Gulmarg or Sonamarg; see Gulmarg by road and Sonamarg by road. Our Srinagar by road guide covers the drive in from Jammu.
Practical tips
- Carry ID. Security checkpoints on the Anantnag–Pahalgam road ask for photo ID; keep originals handy for every traveller.
- Budget for union taxis and ponies. Rates are displayed at the stands; agree the itinerary before you set off and keep small notes.
- Layers. Evenings by the Lidder are cold even in June, and Chandanwari can be snowy until early summer.
- Parking. Pay-and-park lots in town fill up in peak weeks; your chauffeur will manage parking, billed at actual.
- River safety. The Lidder is fast and freezing; keep children back from the edge at Betaab and Aru.
- Connectivity. Postpaid mobile connections work in town; signal fades quickly in the side valleys.
