Srinagar to Sonamarg: the drive in one paragraph
Sonamarg is about 80 km north-east of Srinagar, typically 2.5 hours via Ganderbal, Kangan and Gund along the Sindh river. Expect to pay Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve for a sedan drop and Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve for an Innova Crysta (minimum fare applies), plus 5% GST. Going up and coming back the same evening counts as a full outstation day of 250 km, so the sedan works out to Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve and the Innova to Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve.
Of Kashmir's three classic resorts, Sonamarg is the wildest. At around 2,700 metres it sits in a broad glacial valley where the Sindh river tumbles out of the high Himalaya, with the peaks of the Thajiwas range rising almost straight from the meadow. The name means "meadow of gold", after the way the late-afternoon sun lights the grass and snowfields. It is also a crossroads: the Srinagar–Leh highway runs through it before climbing to the Zojila pass, the Amarnath Yatra's Baltal base camp lies just beyond, and the Great Lakes trek begins nearby.
This guide covers the road and its new tunnel, what to do once you arrive, the local transport rules for Thajiwas and Zero Point, the months to aim for, and the RutzIndia.com fare for Sonamarg as a day trip, an overnight or the first leg of a road trip to Ladakh. The road: Srinagar, Ganderbal and the Sindh valley
Leave Srinagar past Hazratbal or through Soura towards Ganderbal (about 20 km), where the Sindh meets the Jhelum's network of channels. The road then follows the river upstream:
- Kangan (about 40 km). A small market town; a short detour leads to the Naranag temples, a group of 8th-century stone shrines by a stream, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the start of treks to Gangbal lake.
- Gund and Kullan (about 55 to 65 km). The valley narrows; willows and walnut trees give way to pine and fir. Roadside dhabas serve rajma-chawal and noon chai.
- Gagangir and the Z-Morh tunnel. The 6.5 km Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel, opened in January 2025, carries the highway past the avalanche-prone stretch below Sonamarg, giving the resort road access through most of the winter for the first time.
- Sonamarg (about 80 km). The resort spreads along the highway with hotels, a market, the taxi and pony stands, and views up to the glaciers.
The road is a good two-lane national highway, busy with army and goods traffic heading for Ladakh in summer. Our drivers set off early to avoid the convoy timings, which can hold traffic for a while, and they know which dhabas are worth the stop.
What to see and do in Sonamarg
Thajiwas glacier. The signature excursion: a valley about 3 km from the main road ending at a snowfield and glacier, where snow lasts well into summer. It is reached by pony, on foot or by local vehicle only; outside cars are not permitted beyond the stand.
Zojila and Zero Point. Beyond Sonamarg the highway climbs in steep hairpins to the Zojila pass at about 3,500 metres. Beyond it, "Zero Point" is a popular snow spot. Sightseeing trips here are run by the local taxi union from Sonamarg in their own vehicles; tourists generally cannot take an outside taxi up for sightseeing, though through-traffic to Kargil and Leh continues on the highway when the pass is open.
Sindh river. White-water rafting runs on the Sindh in summer, with operators near Sonamarg and further downstream. Trout fishing is possible on licensed beats with a permit.
Baltal. About 15 km beyond Sonamarg, the base camp for the shorter northern route of the Amarnath Yatra in July and August. Access during the yatra is controlled; only pilgrims who have registered through the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board may proceed.
Treks. Sonamarg is the start of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek via Nichnai to Vishansar, Kishansar and Gangbal lakes, and of shorter walks to Nilagrad and the Satsar lakes; all need a registered guide.
The Ganderbal district administration, which covers Sonamarg, publishes visitor information on the Ganderbal district website.

Local transport rules at Sonamarg
Like Pahalgam, Sonamarg protects local livelihoods with clear rules:
- The car you booked with us brings you up the Sindh valley and parks near the pony and taxi stands, or at your hotel.
- For Thajiwas, you choose a licensed pony or walk; for Zojila and Zero Point sightseeing, you hire the local union taxi at its displayed rate and pay the driver directly.
- Your chauffeur waits at the stand or your hotel and drives you back.
Rates for ponies and local taxis are posted by the associations; agree the itinerary and duration before setting off.
Best time to go and what each season offers
- May and June: snow still thick at Thajiwas and Zero Point, green meadows lower down. Zojila typically opens to traffic in spring once the Border Roads Organisation clears it. A very popular window.
- July and August: the Amarnath Yatra via Baltal brings pilgrim traffic and security convoys; hotels fill up. Otherwise pleasant, with occasional rain.
- September and October: crisp and clear, with golden birch and meadows. Excellent for photography and quieter roads.
- November to April: heavy snow. Thanks to the Z-Morh tunnel the resort is increasingly reachable in winter, but snowfall still closes the road at times, many hotels shut, and Zojila is closed for the season. Check conditions before planning.

Add 5% GST to every figure above. What the pony-wallahs and the Sonamarg union drivers charge is settled with them on the spot and never appears on our bill. Toll plazas, any permit fees and parking pass through exactly as paid. If you stay up the valley overnight, your chauffeur's night allowance of Rs 1,500 is added, and any return journey is charged on whichever is greater: the kilometres actually run or 250 km for each calendar day. The cars themselves are no older than four model years. Pay through the online booker by card or UPI, and ask for a GST invoice if a company or tour organiser is paying. Plans change in the mountains, so read the cancellation policy before you commit: nothing is charged if you cancel over 72 hours out, a tenth of the fare inside 72 hours, half inside 48, and all of it inside 24 hours or if nobody turns up.

Who Sonamarg suits, and how to choose the car
Sonamarg is for travellers who want mountains rather than gardens. There is less to "see" in the tick-box sense than at Gulmarg or Pahalgam, but the scale of the scenery, with glaciers hanging above a meadow and the river roaring below, makes it many people's favourite day in Kashmir. Photographers love the soft light of early morning and late afternoon; trekkers use it as a base; and families come for guaranteed summer snow at Thajiwas.
For couples and small families, a sedan does the valley road without difficulty from May to October. If you are six, carrying trekking kit, or planning to continue over the Zojila towards Kargil, choose an Innova Crysta or a Fortuner: the Zojila approach is steep, unpaved in places and often muddy with snowmelt, and ground clearance matters. Groups of eight or more are best in a Tempo Traveller, which also leaves room for rucksacks and tents. Whichever you choose, the same chauffeur stays with you for the whole trip, so there is no changing of cars in Srinagar.
Itineraries built around Sonamarg
One day (about 170 km with local running). Leave Srinagar at 7 am, tea at Kangan, reach Sonamarg by 9.30. Pony to Thajiwas glacier, lunch at a dhaba by the Sindh, and either a union-taxi run to Zero Point in the afternoon or a slow walk along the river. Back in Srinagar by 7 pm.
Two days (about 190 km). Stay overnight to see the valley turn gold at sunset and the glaciers at dawn. On the way back, detour to the Naranag temples near Kangan.
The Ladakh road trip. Srinagar to Sonamarg, over the Zojila to Drass and Kargil for the night, and on to Leh the next day, returning by air or via Manali. Our Srinagar by road guide covers the Jammu approach, and Gulmarg by road makes a good contrasting day in the valley.
Practical tips
- Altitude and cold. Sonamarg sits around 2,700 metres and Zojila around 3,500. Nights are cold all year; bring warm layers, gloves and sunscreen.
- Documents. Carry original photo ID for every traveller; checkpoints on the highway may ask for it.
- Footwear. Waterproof shoes help at Thajiwas, where snowmelt keeps the ground wet.
- Cash. Card acceptance is patchy in Sonamarg; carry cash for ponies, union taxis and dhabas.
- Parking. Organised roadside parking near the stands; any fees are billed at actual.
- Fuel. Fill up in Srinagar or Ganderbal; the station in Sonamarg can be busy in peak season.
