Srinagar to Gulmarg by road: what it takes and what it costs
Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, typically 1.5 to 2 hours via Magam and Tangmarg, the last 13 km a winding hill road. Because the drop is short, we bill the minimum fare: a chauffeur-driven sedan is Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve, plus 5% GST. A same-day return is billed at the 250 km day minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.
The name means "meadow of flowers", and in June that is exactly what you find: a vast, gently rolling bowl of grass at around 2,650 metres, ringed by fir and pine, with the snow-streaked Apharwat ridge above and, on a clear day, a glimpse of Nanga Parbat far to the north. In winter the same meadow disappears under deep powder and Gulmarg becomes India's best-known ski resort. Either way, the drive from Srinagar is short enough for a day trip and the resort rewards an overnight stay.
This guide covers the road and its winter rules, the gondola and what else to do up top, the seasons, and how RutzIndia.com prices a Gulmarg day out or a stay as part of a wider Kashmir taxi service itinerary. If you are coming up from Jammu first, start with our Srinagar by road guide.

Things to do in Gulmarg
The Gulmarg Gondola. The cable car runs in two stages. Phase 1 climbs from Gulmarg to Kongdori, a high meadow with views back over the resort; Phase 2 continues to the shoulder of Apharwat at close to 4,000 metres, where there is snow for much of the year. Tickets for each phase are sold separately and in peak season are best booked online in advance through the official cable car corporation's portal; queues at the base station can be long otherwise. Phase 2 is suspended in high winds, so start early.
Skiing and snow play (December to March). Gulmarg's slopes suit everyone from first-timers on the nursery runs near the base to experienced skiers heading off Apharwat. Ski schools and equipment hire operate in the village. Sledge rides and snow-scooter runs are offered around the meadow at fixed rates.
Summer walks and pony rides. In the green months the meadow is laced with trails: to Khilanmarg above Gulmarg, to the Seven Springs, or, for fit walkers with a guide, from the Apharwat station to the Alpather lake, which stays frozen well into early summer. Ponies are licensed and rates are posted; agree the route before setting off.
St Mary's Church and the Maharani temple. Two small landmarks in the meadow: a stone-and-wood church from the British era and a hilltop Shiva temple built for the royal family of Kashmir, visible from all over the bowl.
The golf course. Among the highest green-fee golf courses in the world, laid out across the meadow itself.
Babareshi and Drung. On the way up, the shrine of Baba Reshi, a Sufi saint, sits in the forest below Gulmarg, and the Drung waterfall near Tangmarg freezes into a sheet of ice in mid-winter.
The Baramulla district administration, in whose district Gulmarg lies, publishes visitor notes and contacts on the Baramulla district website.
The drive from Srinagar and what changes in winter
Leave Srinagar westwards past the airport turn at Humhama or through Parimpora, then on through Magam and the orchard country of Budgam and Baramulla districts to Tangmarg, the market town at the foot of the hill. From Tangmarg the road climbs about 13 km in hairpin bends through pine forest to Gulmarg. In good conditions the whole run is a relaxed 90 minutes; add time at the Tangmarg checkpost in peak season.
Winter is different. After snowfall:
- The climb from Tangmarg is ploughed but icy, and the authorities may require snow chains or four-wheel-drive vehicles beyond Tangmarg. Chains are fitted at Tangmarg by local operators for a fee.
- When conditions are severe, only local four-wheel-drive taxis are allowed up, and you switch vehicles at Tangmarg while your chauffeur waits below.
- Days are short and temperatures fall well below zero after dark, so we plan departures from Gulmarg by mid-afternoon on day trips.
This is why we recommend an Innova Crysta or Toyota Fortuner for December to March: better ground clearance and grip, and more space for ski gear and heavy jackets. In summer a sedan handles the road easily.
Local rules. Gulmarg's ponies, sledges, snow-scooters and some local taxi runs are organised by local associations with displayed rates. Your RutzIndia.com car takes you to the resort and to the gondola base; activities up top are paid directly to the licensed operators.

Best time to visit Gulmarg
- April to June: snow melts from the meadow, flowers come out and the weather is crisp. The best time for sightseeing families.
- July to September: green and busy, with occasional afternoon showers. Good for walks and the gondola to the high snowfields.
- October and November: golden, quiet and cold, with the first snow often in late November.
- December to March: the ski season, with the deepest snow typically in January and February. Christmas and New Year are extremely busy, as are Republic Day weekends.

Staying overnight: hotels, food and the evening in Gulmarg
Gulmarg has no town in the usual sense: the resort is a scatter of hotels, huts and government lodges around the edge of the meadow, with a small market near the bus stand. Accommodation ranges from simple wooden guesthouses to a handful of large resort hotels with heated rooms and views up to Apharwat. In the ski season and in June, rooms sell out weeks ahead, so fix your hotel before you book the car; your chauffeur then knows exactly which lane to take, because several properties sit on unmarked tracks off the ring road.
Evenings are quiet. After the day visitors leave around four, the meadow empties, the temperature drops quickly and the light over the firs turns soft and blue. Dinner is usually in your hotel: rogan josh, yakhni, haakh greens with rice, and kahwa or noon chai to finish. There is little nightlife, which is precisely the point.
Drivers stay in dedicated drivers' rooms at most hotels or in the resort's driver accommodation; the night allowance on your invoice covers this. If you would like the car available for an early sunrise drive to the gondola base, just tell the chauffeur the evening before. Longer multi-city itineraries across the valley are priced like any outstation cab booking, and the full range of vehicles is on the fleet page.
Itineraries: one to three days
One day from Srinagar (about 110 km with local running). Leave at 7.30 am to beat the gondola queue. Phase 1 to Kongdori, Phase 2 to Apharwat if the wind allows, lunch in the meadow, St Mary's Church and the Maharani temple in the afternoon, and back down by 4 pm.
Two days (about 130 km). Stay a night in Gulmarg. The meadow is at its most beautiful at dawn and dusk, after the day-trippers leave. Morning walk to Khilanmarg, afternoon at Babareshi and Drung on the way down.
Three days, the western valley. Add a day to Sonamarg or Pahalgam from Srinagar; our Sonamarg by road and Pahalgam by road guides cover those routes and their own local-taxi rules.
Practical tips
- Altitude. Gulmarg sits around 2,650 metres and Apharwat close to 4,000. Walk slowly at the top station, drink water and come down if you feel dizzy or breathless.
- Clothing. Even in July it can be cold on Apharwat. In winter, snow boots and gloves can be hired locally, but thermal layers are best brought from home.
- Cash and connectivity. ATMs exist but can run dry in peak weeks; carry some cash for ponies and snow activities. Postpaid mobile connections work better than out-of-state prepaid SIMs.
- Parking. There is a car park near the gondola base; charges are billed at actual. Your chauffeur will wait there or at your hotel.
- Photography. Allowed everywhere except near security installations; drones need permission.
- More on Kashmir. Wider travel information for the region is on the national Incredible India portal.
