Omkareshwar by road: a chauffeur-driven trip from Indore

An island in the Narmada shaped, the faithful say, like the sacred syllable Om: a Jyotirlinga reached by swaying footbridges, a new giant statue of Adi Shankaracharya and a river that roars when the dam gates open.

Indore to Omkareshwar by road: distance, time and taxi fare

Omkareshwar is about 78 km south of Indore, typically a 2-hour drive via Simrol, the Bai gram ghat and the Narmada bridge at Mortakka. RutzIndia.com's one-way price is the class floor for an Indore start, Rs 3,570 Pay Now to Reserve for a Dzire or Rs 6,240 Pay Now to Reserve for an Innova Crysta, plus 5% GST. A same-day return with waiting is Rs 9,000 by sedan.

Of the twelve Jyotirlingas, Omkareshwar has perhaps the most beautiful setting. The shrine stands on Mandhata, a rocky island in the Narmada where the river splits around a hill, and the island's outline, seen on a map or from the air, is said to resemble the Om symbol. Pilgrims cross by one of two suspension bridges or by boat, climb through a lane of flower sellers and bell stalls, and queue beneath the temple spire for darshan. Across the water, the Mamleshwar temple on the southern bank completes the pair that many families visit together.

A car with a chauffeur suits Omkareshwar particularly well. There are no flights or quick trains that drop you at the ghats, the road from Indore has a winding ghat stretch, and the day works best when it starts early and includes a second stop, whether Ujjain, Maheshwar or simply a riverside lunch. Families, senior citizens, temple groups in a Tempo Traveller and travellers doing a Malwa circuit all use this route; the Indore taxi service page covers pickups anywhere in the city.

What to see and do at Omkareshwar

Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. The main temple sits on the island's southern face, rising from the river in several storeys. The inner sanctum is small and darshan moves quickly on weekdays, less so on Mondays and festival days. Special darshan, puja bookings and timings are published by the temple trust on the official Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga website.

Mamleshwar. On the south bank, the Mamleshwar temple is an older stone temple complex that many devotees regard as the other half of the Jyotirlinga. It is quieter and lovely in the evening light.

The suspension bridges and the ghats. The two jhula pul footbridges give the best views of the island, the temple and the river, especially just after sunrise. Boats cross between the ghats for a small fare and also run short river trips; when the river is high in the monsoon, boat services are often suspended for safety.

Ekatma Dham and the Statue of Oneness. On the Mandhata hilltop, a 108-foot statue of Adi Shankaracharya was unveiled in 2023 as part of a larger centre dedicated to his philosophy. Tradition holds that the young Shankara met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada at Omkareshwar, and a cave associated with that meeting is shown to visitors near the temple.

The island parikrama. A footpath of roughly seven kilometres loops around Mandhata, passing ruined gateways, the Siddhanath temple remains, the Gauri Somnath temple and quiet river views. Allow two to three hours at an easy pace; start early in summer.

The Narmada itself. The river is worshipped along its whole length, and you will see people bathing at the Koteeteerth and Chakrateerth ghats, floating lamps at dusk and walking the Narmada parikrama, a months-long pilgrimage on foot along both banks. The upstream dam and reservoir also host one of the country's largest floating solar projects, visible as you drive in.

Food. Omkareshwar is a pilgrim town with simple vegetarian bhojanalayas, poha stalls and sweet shops; do not expect restaurants in the Indore sense. Most families eat a thali near the ghats or carry lunch back to Indore. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism guide to Omkareshwar lists more sights on the island.

Where to stay. Rooms range from trust-run dharamshalas and ashram guesthouses near the ghats to a handful of mid-range hotels on the approach road and a state tourism property above the river. Most are basic but clean; book ahead for festival dates and weekends in the cooler months. If you prefer a hotel with a pool and a proper restaurant, stay in Indore or in Maheshwar and treat Omkareshwar as a day out, which is exactly what a car with a driver makes easy.

The road: Simrol ghat, the Narmada bridge and the last 12 km

The drive leaves Indore on the Khandwa road through Simrol and then drops off the Malwa plateau through a ghat near Bai gram, a series of bends through dry forest that is busy with trucks. The Indore-Khandwa corridor is being rebuilt as a wider highway with new alignments and tunnels, so expect diversions and slow patches; an experienced chauffeur knows where the temporary lanes run and avoids overtaking on the blind curves.

At Balwada the road continues to Mortakka, where it crosses the Narmada on a long bridge; Omkareshwar Road railway station is here. From Mortakka a smaller road runs about 12 km west along the river to Omkareshwar town. The final approach narrows, and on crowded days traffic is stopped at parking lots on the edge of town, from where you walk or take an e-rickshaw to the bridges.

Coming from Ujjain, the road runs south through Indore's outskirts and joins the same route, about 140 km in total. From Maheshwar it is roughly 65 km east via Mandleshwar and Barwaha, a pleasant river-country drive through cotton fields. There are no state borders on any of these routes, so the only extras are highway tolls where they apply and parking.

Best time to visit, festivals and monsoon warnings

October to March is ideal: bright days, cool mornings on the bridges and comfortable walking for the parikrama. Kartik Purnima (usually November) brings a large riverside fair, and Narmada Jayanti in January or February fills the ghats with lamps. Mahashivratri and Mondays in the month of Shravan (July-August) are the busiest days of the year; on these days the town sets up one-way queues, and the drive from the parking lot to the bridge is replaced by a long walk.

April to June is hot, over 40 degrees in the afternoons, so do darshan early and be back on the road by noon. In the monsoon the river swells and, when the dam gates upstream open, the Narmada turns brown and fierce; it is spectacular to watch from the bridge but boat rides stop and some ghats are closed. The district administration of Khandwa, under which Omkareshwar falls, issues advisories during high water.

Chauffeured services RutzIndia.com offers for Omkareshwar

Most guests take a same-day return from Indore, with the chauffeur waiting at the parking lot while they cross to the island. Others book a one-way drop to a riverside guesthouse and a separate pickup the next day, or combine Omkareshwar with Ujjain or Maheshwar. Groups of 10-17 prefer a Tempo Traveller; see Tempo Traveller on rent. For the complete temple circuit, look at our pilgrimage taxi page.

Pickups at Indore airport include a name board, flight tracking and 30 minutes of free waiting after domestic arrivals (60 after international flights), after which waiting is charged at the hourly rate.

The loop with Maheshwar costs the same as a plain return because both fall within the 250 km daily minimum, so it is worth adding. Fares are before 5% GST, with tolls and parking at actual cost and a driver night allowance of Rs 1,500 when the car stays overnight. Card and UPI payments go through the booker and GST invoices are issued for company travel. Cancellations are free more than 72 hours ahead; 10% is kept within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on a no-show, as the cancellation policy explains.

Suggested plans: one day, or a slow two days on the river

Day trip from Indore (about 160-240 km). Leave at 6 am to beat the ghat traffic and reach the parking lot by 8. Cross the bridge, take darshan at Omkareshwar, walk down to the ghat and take the boat across to Mamleshwar. Climb to Ekatma Dham if you have the energy, then have lunch and either head straight back to Indore or continue to Maheshwar for the evening aarti at Ahilya Ghat before driving home.

Two days (about 180 km plus local). Day one: drive down in the afternoon, check in, and watch the evening aarti and the lamps on the river from the bridge. Day two: early darshan before the crowds, the island parikrama in the cool of the morning, and back to Indore by evening. Add Ujjain the next day and you have covered both Jyotirlingas of Malwa.

A longer Narmada circuit. Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and the plateau ruins of Mandu together make a superb three-day loop of roughly 350-400 km from Indore, well within the three-day minimum of 750 km that applies to a retained car.

Practical tips for Omkareshwar

  • Walking. From the parking lot to the temple is a walk of 15-25 minutes including the bridge and the temple steps. Senior citizens can use e-rickshaws to the bridge approach.
  • Footwear and bags. Leave shoes at the stands near the temple and keep bags light; phones are restricted in the sanctum.
  • Boats. Use the licensed boats at the main ghats and wear the life jacket offered. In high water, do not insist on a crossing.
  • Money. Carry some cash for flowers, boats and shoe stands; UPI works at most stalls but not all.
  • Ghat driving. The descent near Bai gram is steep with heavy trucks; our chauffeurs keep a steady pace and avoid night driving on this stretch when possible.
  • Weekends. Indore families visit on Sundays; a weekday visit is far calmer.

Omkareshwar is one of those places where the journey is part of the blessing: the plateau falling away to the Narmada, the bridge swaying underfoot, the island temple glowing at dusk. Let us handle the road so you can take it all in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How far is Omkareshwar from Indore by road?

Omkareshwar is about 78 km from Indore via Simrol, the Bai gram ghat, Balwada and the Narmada bridge at Mortakka, then 12 km along the river. The drive typically takes around 2 hours, sometimes more because of highway construction diversions and truck traffic on the ghat section.

What is the taxi fare from Indore to Omkareshwar?

The drop is short enough that the minimum fare applies: Rs 3,570 Pay Now to Reserve for a sedan and Rs 6,240 Pay Now to Reserve for an Innova Crysta with RutzIndia.com, with GST at 5% on top. A same-day return with the car waiting is billed on our 250 km daily minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova. Can I visit Omkareshwar and Ujjain in one day?

Yes, it is a long but popular day of about 275 km from Indore. Can cars go up to the Omkareshwar temple?

No. Cars stop at the parking areas at the edge of town, and the temple on Mandhata island is reached on foot over the suspension bridges or by boat. The walk from the parking lot to the shrine takes 15-25 minutes; e-rickshaws cover part of it for elderly visitors.

Is it safe to visit Omkareshwar in the monsoon?

What is the best time to go to Omkareshwar?
