Nandi Hills by road: distance, timing and what the cab costs

Nandi Hills is about 60 km north of central Bangalore, typically 1.5 hours before dawn via Bellary Road (NH44) past the airport. A RutzIndia.com sedan is Rs 4,170 Pay Now to Reserve one way (minimum trip fare); a sunrise day return from central Bangalore is billed at the 250 km day minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before 5% GST, tolls and parking.

Every weekend, long before first light, a stream of cars, motorcycles and determined cyclists heads north out of Bangalore towards a granite hill rising about 1,478 metres above sea level. The reward is the view that has made Nandi Hills famous: on many winter and monsoon mornings, the plains below vanish under a sea of cloud, and the sun rises out of it in a wash of orange and pink. It is the city's favourite sunrise, and it is close enough to fit before a working day.

It is also a place of history. The fortified summit, known as Nandidurga, was strengthened by Tipu Sultan and used as a summer retreat; the British later built bungalows for officials escaping the heat. The ancient Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple at the foot of the hill predates both by centuries. And because the hill sits just beyond Kempegowda International Airport, it is also the most practical short excursion for anyone with a long layover or an early-morning arrival.

A chauffeur makes all the difference here for one reason above all: timing. Leaving at 4 am, finding the gate in the dark and queueing for parking with sleepy passengers is far easier when someone else is driving.

What to see at Nandi Hills

Sunrise viewpoints. The main terraces and the edges of the summit plateau face east. On clear mornings you see the plains and the Chikkaballapur hills; on misty ones, the cloud sea. Arrive before sunrise, because once the sun is up the mist burns off quickly.

Tipu's Drop. A sheer cliff on the western edge of the summit, about 600 metres high, from which, according to local legend, prisoners were thrown. The view down to the plains is dramatic.

Tipu Sultan's summer palace (Tashk-e-Jannat). A two-storeyed structure on the summit that served as a retreat. It is modest compared with the palace in Bangalore but atmospheric in the early mist.

Yoga Nandeeshwara temple. On the summit, a small Dravidian-style temple dedicated to Shiva as the yogi.

Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple. At Nandi village at the foot of the hill, a remarkable temple complex whose earliest parts date to the ninth century, with later additions by the Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara kings. Carved pillars, a stepped tank and a peaceful courtyard make it one of the finest early temples near Bangalore. The Archaeological Survey of India protects it; do not miss it on the way down.

Gardens and walks. The summit has well-kept gardens, eucalyptus groves and walking paths, maintained by the state's horticulture department. It is a pleasant place to linger with a coffee after the crowds leave.

The official tourism portal's Nandi Hills page covers the hill's history, and the Chikkaballapur district website publishes local notices, including any changes to entry arrangements.

The drive: Bellary Road, the airport and the final climb

From central Bangalore

Your chauffeur takes Bellary Road (NH44) north through Hebbal and past Yelahanka and the airport turn-off, continuing to Devanahalli. A few kilometres beyond, a well-signed road branches west towards Nandi village and climbs the hill in a series of hairpin bends. There is a toll on the airport stretch of the highway, billed at actual cost. At 4 am the whole run is quick; after 7 am on a weekday, Hebbal and the airport road can slow to a crawl.

From the airport

Kempegowda International Airport is only about 30 km from the summit. If you land early in the morning, the chauffeur can take you straight up for sunrise and then on to your hotel; details of terminals and facilities are on the Bengaluru airport website. For regular city transfers see Bangalore airport taxi.

The hairpins

The ghat road to the summit is short but has tight hairpins and, on weekends, a mix of cars, bikes and cyclists climbing hard. Our chauffeurs take it steadily, keep a safe distance from cyclists and never overtake on blind bends.

Gate timings, parking and crowds

Access to the summit is controlled by the authorities, typically with the gates opening early in the morning for sunrise visitors and closing in the evening; there is an entry fee and a vehicle parking fee. Weekend and holiday crowds can fill the summit parking early, and at peak times entry has been regulated. Arrangements have changed over the years, so check the district notice or ask us before you go; your chauffeur will aim to be at the gate as it opens.

On busy mornings the chauffeur may drop you close to the entrance and wait in a lower parking area, or stay in the queue while you walk up. Keep your phone charged so you can coordinate the pickup.

Best time of year

  • September to February. The best season. Post-monsoon and winter mornings are cool and often misty, giving the best chance of the famous cloud sea. December and January mornings can be genuinely cold on the summit.
  • March to May. Clear, warmer mornings; the view is sharper but the cloud sea is rare.
  • June to August. Monsoon mist and drizzle; sometimes the summit is inside the cloud, which is atmospheric but not ideal for photographs.
  • Crowds. Saturdays and Sundays are very busy from 5 am; weekday sunrises are far calmer.

The 8 hr / 80 km package suits guests starting from Hebbal, Yelahanka or the airport hotels, where the round trip stays within 80 km; from south Bangalore the outstation day return is usually cheaper and more flexible. The MUV option (Ertiga class) is Rs 42 per km for outstation or Rs 9,450 on the local package.

We waive cancellation charges entirely when you cancel more than 72 hours before pickup. Inside 72 hours we keep 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours or on a no-show the full fare; it is all spelled out in the cancellation policy. Half-day and full-day plans

The classic sunrise (about 130 km, 5 to 6 hours). Pickup at 4 am in central Bangalore, at the gate for opening, sunrise on the summit, a walk to Tipu's Drop and breakfast at the summit canteen or a highway restaurant. Visit the Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple at 8 am and be home by 10.

Sunrise plus history (about 160 km, full morning). Add Devanahalli fort, the birthplace of Tipu Sultan, with its walls and old temples, on the way back.

A northern day out (about 250 km). Sunrise at Nandi, then continue to the Vijayanagara-era temple of Lepakshi by road in Andhra Pradesh, and return to Bangalore by evening. Interstate travel may involve a state permit, billed at actual cost.

Team outings. Companies and friends' groups often combine sunrise with a vineyard visit in the Nandi Valley grape country or a resort breakfast. A Tempo Traveller from Bangalore keeps the group together.

Cyclists, photographers and proposal planners

Nandi Hills draws a surprising variety of early risers, and each has slightly different needs from a car.

Road cyclists ride out from the city or start from the base of the hill to attack the climb. A family member who does not ride can follow comfortably in a sedan and meet the rider at the summit with warm clothes and breakfast. For a group, a Tempo Traveller with the rear seats folded or removed by arrangement can carry bicycles to the base; tell us the number of bikes when booking so we can confirm what fits.

Photographers want to be in position at least 30 minutes before sunrise, and often want to stay after the crowds leave to catch the light on the temple at Nandi village. A day-return booking gives that flexibility without the pressure of a fixed drop-off time.

Couples planning a proposal or anniversary sunrise usually prefer a quieter weekday and a more special car. A Mercedes E-Class or similar luxury sedan can be arranged on request; ask the travel desk and we will quote for the morning.

Whatever the reason for the trip, the rule of Nandi Hills stays the same: the earlier you leave Bangalore, the better the morning will be.

Practical tips

  • Dress warmly. Summit temperatures at dawn can be several degrees lower than in the city; bring a jacket and a scarf in winter.
  • Monkeys. The summit's bonnet macaques will snatch food; keep snacks in the car.
  • Plastic. Carry a reusable bottle; littering is fined.
  • Cyclists. Weekend mornings bring hundreds of riders; your chauffeur drives with extra care, and you should too if you are on foot near the road.
  • Temple etiquette. Remove footwear and dress modestly at both Nandeeshwara temples.
  • Rest stops. Clean restrooms are available at the summit and at larger highway restaurants near Devanahalli.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How far is Nandi Hills from Bangalore?

Nandi Hills is about 60 km from central Bangalore and roughly 30 km from Kempegowda airport. Before dawn the drive takes about 1.5 hours via Bellary Road and Devanahalli; later in the morning, traffic at Hebbal and near the airport can add considerable time.

What does a cab to Nandi Hills cost?

A one-way sedan drop is Rs 4,170 Pay Now to Reserve, the minimum trip fare for Bangalore. A sunrise return from central Bangalore is billed at the 250 km outstation day minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before 5% GST, tolls and parking. From north Bangalore, the 8 hr / 80 km local package at Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve can be cheaper.

What time do Nandi Hills gates open for sunrise?

The gates typically open early in the morning for sunrise visitors, with entry and parking fees charged. Exact timings and weekend arrangements have changed over the years, so check the latest district notice before you go. Our chauffeurs plan to be at the gate as it opens.

When can I see the cloud sea at Nandi Hills?

The best chances are on cool, humid mornings from roughly September to February, especially after rain. The mist forms overnight and burns off soon after sunrise, so you need to be on the summit before dawn. Clear summer mornings rarely produce it.

Can I visit Nandi Hills on a layover at Bangalore airport?

Yes. The summit is about 30 km from the airport, within our airport transfer band: Rs 4,170 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan each way, or book a short local package. Allow at least four to five hours between flights, including security. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits with a name board.

Is Nandi Hills suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, with some care. The car can reach the summit parking area, from where the viewpoints are a short walk on paved paths. Weekend crowds can be tiring, so a weekday visit is better. The Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple at the foot of the hill is flat and easily accessible.

Can a group of 14 go to Nandi Hills together?

Yes. A Tempo Traveller one-way is Rs 11,280 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare) and a sunrise day return is Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve at the 250 km day minimum, before GST and tolls. The hill road suits Tempo Travellers, though weekend parking can be tight. See Tempo Traveller on rent.
