How do you reach Mukteshwar by road, and what will it cost?
Mukteshwar is roughly 345 km from Delhi by road via NH9, Rampur, Haldwani, Kathgodam, Bhowali and Ramgarh, a drive of about 8 to 9 hours. From Kathgodam station it is about 70 km. With RutzIndia.com a sedan from Delhi costs Rs 12,420 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 19,670 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST.
Mukteshwar is the Kumaon hill town for people who find Nainital too busy and Ranikhet too far. At around 2,200 metres it stands higher than either, strung along a forested ridge above the orchard valleys of Ramgarh and Satkhol, and it looks straight at the snows: Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli fill the northern horizon on clear days. The town takes its name from the Mukteshwar Dham temple to Shiva on the highest point of the ridge, and much of the land around it belongs to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, whose campus has been here since the 1890s and whose presence has kept the forests largely intact.
Jim Corbett readers will know the name from his account of the Muktesar man-eater. Today the tigers are gone, and what remains is a peaceful ridge of cottages, homestays and orchard estates, with apples, plums, apricots and peaches in summer and some of the clearest winter skies in the region. It is ideal for couples, remote workers, families who want a slow long weekend and anyone who loves walking. RutzIndia.com runs one-way drops and round trips from Delhi NCR, and transfers from Kathgodam, Pantnagar and Nainital.

Things to see and do around Mukteshwar
- Mukteshwar Dham. The Shiva temple on the summit of the ridge, reached by a flight of steps from the road. The views from the top over the valleys and the snow peaks are the best in town.
- Chauli ki Jali. A dramatic rock outcrop just beyond the temple, with sheer cliffs and a natural hole in the rock that local tradition connects with blessings for childless women. Adventure operators run rappelling and rock-climbing sessions here in good weather; always go with a registered operator and proper safety gear.
- Walks through the IVRI forest. The old institute estate has shady trails under oak and deodar and heritage buildings from the colonial era. Some areas are restricted, so stick to public paths.
- Bhalu Gaad waterfall. A short forest trek from near Sitla to a pretty waterfall, pleasant after the monsoon.
- Ramgarh. About 25 km back towards Bhowali, the fruit bowl of Kumaon, known for its orchards and for its literary links: Rabindranath Tagore is associated with the hilltop now called Tagore Top, and the Hindi poet Mahadevi Verma's summer home at Umagarh is preserved as a small memorial.
- Orchard stays and fruit stalls. From May to August, roadside stalls sell fresh plums, apricots, peaches and early apples, and local cooperatives sell jams, chutneys and juices through the year.
The Nainital district website covers Mukteshwar and the surrounding area, and Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam, the state tourism corporation for the region, lists its tourist rest houses across Kumaon.
The drive from Delhi to Mukteshwar
The plains leg
As with most of Kumaon, the first 280 km or so follow the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, NH9 through Hapur and Moradabad, and the road through Rampur and Rudrapur to Haldwani. Expect about 6 hours to Kathgodam with a breakfast stop. Traffic in Haldwani town is the main delay; leaving Delhi very early helps.
The hill leg
From Kathgodam the road climbs to Bhimtal and on to Bhowali, where the Nainital road turns off. Your car continues east to Ramgarh, winding through orchards and small villages, then to Nathuakhan and along the ridge to Mukteshwar. This section, about 70 km from Kathgodam, takes around 2.5 hours. The road is narrow in places, with some steep drops, but it is well used and generally in decent shape. After heavy winter snow the upper sections can be slippery for a day or two.
From Nainital or Bhimtal
Many travellers combine Mukteshwar with the lakes. Nainital is about 50 km away and Bhimtal about 45 km, each roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Our Delhi to Nainital taxi page covers the lake-district leg, and our guides to Bhimtal by road and Nainital by road explain what to do there.
Arriving by air, Pantnagar is about 105 km away. For train and flight arrivals we track timings, bring a name board and wait free for 30 minutes after domestic landings, after which waiting is charged by the hour.

The best time to visit Mukteshwar
- March to June: blossom in the orchards in spring, then pleasant summer days in the low twenties. May and June are the popular months, though still far calmer than Nainital.
- July to September: monsoon. The ridge is often wrapped in cloud, walks are wet, and the mountain view disappears, but the forest is at its most beautiful. Some slips on the Ramgarh road.
- October to December: crisp, clear and cold, with superb views of the snow peaks. Excellent for photography and stargazing.
- January and February: Mukteshwar is one of the Kumaon towns most likely to see snow, usually in January. It can be magical, but carry warm clothing and allow for delays on the road.
There are no permits or entry passes for Mukteshwar itself; the adventure activities at Chauli ki Jali are paid directly to operators.

A 3-day Mukteshwar itinerary
Day 1: Delhi to Mukteshwar (about 345 km). Leave Delhi by 6 am, breakfast near Gajraula, lunch at Bhimtal or Bhowali, and reach Mukteshwar by late afternoon. Watch the sunset from your cottage.
Day 2: The ridge (about 40 km of local driving). Sunrise over the peaks, then the Mukteshwar Dham temple and Chauli ki Jali in the morning, with rappelling if you are keen. After lunch, a walk through the IVRI forest or down to Bhalu Gaad waterfall.
Day 3: Ramgarh and home (about 370 km). Stop at Ramgarh for orchards, fruit products and Tagore Top, then drive back to Delhi. With an extra day, spend a night at Bhimtal or continue to Almora, about 70 km away; see our Almora by road guide.
Where to stay and what to eat
Mukteshwar has no big hotels, and that is part of its charm. Accommodation is mostly in cottages, boutique homestays, orchard estates and a few mid-sized resorts along the ridge and on the slopes towards Sitla, Satkhol and Dhanachuli. Many have wonderful views and home-cooked Kumaoni food, but some sit at the end of steep, narrow lanes. Tell us where you are staying so the driver can plan the last approach and, if needed, park at a wider spot.
Food is simple and satisfying: dal, rice and seasonal vegetables with bhatt ki dal or aloo ke gutke, and fresh fruit in summer. Small cafés near the temple road serve tea, Maggi and snacks. Buy fruit preserves and apricot oil from the local shops as gifts.
Stargazing and slow evenings
With little light pollution and a high, dry ridge, Mukteshwar has some of the darkest night skies within a day's drive of Delhi, especially from October to February. Several homestays keep a telescope or organise simple stargazing sessions on clear, moonless nights; ask when you book. Otherwise evenings are quiet affairs of bonfires, board games and early dinners, which is exactly what most visitors come for. Carry a warm cap and a flask of tea if you plan to sit out under the stars; the ridge gets cold very quickly after dark.
Practical tips for Mukteshwar
- Start early from Delhi. The final ridge road is best driven in daylight.
- Pack for real cold. Even in May, nights can dip close to single digits; in January they fall below freezing.
- Carry cash. ATMs are few; top up at Haldwani or Bhowali.
- Network is variable. Some operators work well on the ridge, others poorly. Remote workers should check with their host.
- Respect the IVRI estate. Restricted areas are clearly marked.
- Keep the car for side trips. Local taxis are scarce, and your own driver makes Ramgarh, Nainital and Almora easy. Need a car in the capital too? See our taxi service in Delhi.
