Khajjiar by car: the short answer
Khajjiar is about 215 km from Amritsar, roughly 6 hours by car through Pathankot, Banikhet and Dalhousie, then 22 km of forest road past Kalatop. A chauffeur-driven sedan from RutzIndia.com costs Rs 7,740 Pay Now to Reserve one way; an Innova Crysta is Rs 12,250 Pay Now to Reserve. Fares are before 5% GST, with tolls, state entry fees and parking charged at actual.
Some places are famous for a single view, and Khajjiar is one of them. You come round a final bend in the deodar forest and the trees simply stop: in front of you is a long, saucer-shaped meadow of bright green turf, a small lake at its centre, a wooden temple at one edge and a wall of cedar all around. At about 1,900 metres, with the snowy Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges visible on clear days, it has drawn comparisons with the Alps for generations. The story goes that in 1992 a visiting Swiss diplomat formally "baptised" it a mini Switzerland, and a yellow Swiss-style hiking sign pointing towards Bern still stands near the meadow.
Khajjiar is almost always visited together with Dalhousie, 22 km away, and often with Chamba, a similar distance downhill on the other side. Travellers from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Pathankot make it a long weekend; visitors from Delhi add it to a Kangra and Chamba circuit. Either way, you will want a car, because the Kalatop forest road and the Chamba descent are lovely to drive and awkward to do by bus.

What to do at Khajjiar
- Walk the meadow. The simplest pleasure is the best: a slow loop around the rim of the glade, sitting under the cedars, watching clouds move across the grass. Mornings are quietest.
- The lake and floating islets. The small central lake is fed by streams from the hillside and is known for patches of floating turf. Its size shrinks and grows with the seasons.
- Khajji Nag temple. A small wooden temple to the serpent deity after whom Khajjiar is named, with carved panels and a pagoda-style roof; its origins are generally dated to around the twelfth century. Remove shoes and keep noise low.
- Horse rides and zorbing. Local operators offer pony rides around the meadow and inflatable zorb rolls down the grass slopes. Agree the fare and duration before you start.
- Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary. The road from Dalhousie passes through this sanctuary of deodar and blue pine, with a forest rest house at Kalatop and walking trails where you may spot langurs, barking deer and Himalayan birds.
- Dainkund and Pohlani Mata. Near Lakkar Mandi on the Dalhousie side, a short walk leads to one of the highest viewpoints in the area.
- Chamba. Downhill from Khajjiar, the old capital of the Chamba kingdom has the Lakshmi Narayan temple complex, the Chaugan green and the Bhuri Singh Museum with its miniature paintings. It makes a natural continuation of a Khajjiar day.
Snacks at Khajjiar are simple: tea, pakoras, corn and Maggi at the stalls near the meadow. For a proper meal, plan lunch in Dalhousie or Chamba.
The road to Khajjiar
Amritsar to Pathankot (about 110 km)
The first leg is fast, flat highway through Batala and Gurdaspur, with plenty of dhabas for breakfast. Pathankot is your last big town on the plains and a good fuel stop.
Pathankot to Dalhousie (about 80 km)
You enter Himachal near the Chakki river, pay the state entry fee for out-of-state cars (passed on at actual), and climb through Dunera and Banikhet. Much of this is a well-graded hill road with steady curves rather than tight hairpins.
Dalhousie to Khajjiar via Kalatop (about 22 km)
From Dalhousie the road climbs gently to Lakkar Mandi and then runs through the Kalatop forest to Khajjiar. It is narrow in places, shaded and slow, typically 45 minutes to an hour. After heavy snow this higher stretch is often the first to close and the last to reopen.
Onward to Chamba (about 24 km)
The road beyond Khajjiar descends to Chamba town on the Ravi. You can return to Dalhousie by the direct Chamba road via Banikhet, making a satisfying loop without retracing your steps.
From elsewhere: Pathankot railway station is about 100 km from Khajjiar; Jalandhar roughly 230 km; Delhi about 580 km, which almost everyone splits over two days. Our outstation cabs page explains how longer one-way and round trips are billed.
Airports: Pathankot's small airstrip is the closest, Gaggal (Kangra) is about 130 km away, and Amritsar about 215 km. We track flights and meet you with a name board, holding the car free for 60 minutes after international arrivals and 30 minutes after domestic ones, then charging the hourly rate.

Seasons at Khajjiar
- April to June: fresh green grass, wildflowers and pleasant sun. This is the busiest time, with Punjab and Delhi school holidays peaking from late May.
- July to mid-September: monsoon mist and very green turf, but the meadow can be waterlogged and the approach roads slippery. Landslides occasionally delay the Pathankot section.
- Late September to November: golden light, clear views of the snow ranges and far fewer people. Our pick for photography.
- December to February: Khajjiar and the Kalatop forest can be blanketed in snow. It is beautiful but cold, and the road from Lakkar Mandi can shut for days after a heavy storm. Go in an SUV, keep dates flexible and check conditions before leaving Dalhousie.
The Chamba district administration is the authority for local roads and advisories, and Wikipedia's Khajjiar page has a useful background summary on the meadow and temple.

Three days: Amritsar, Khajjiar and Chamba
Day 1: Amritsar to Dalhousie (about 195 km). Leave after breakfast, lunch around Pathankot and check in at Dalhousie by late afternoon. An evening stroll on the promenade. Our Dalhousie by road guide has more on the town.
Day 2: Khajjiar and Chamba loop (about 95 km). Early start to reach Khajjiar by 9 am, before the day-trippers. Walk the meadow, visit the Khajji Nag temple, then drive down to Chamba for the Lakshmi Narayan temples and lunch. Return to Dalhousie via Banikhet.
Day 3: Back to Amritsar (about 195 km). A leisurely morning, then descend to the plains, reaching Amritsar by evening. If you have more time, continue east to Dharamshala instead, roughly 130 km from Dalhousie; see our Dharamshala by road guide.
Tips for a smooth Khajjiar visit
- Parking: space near the meadow is limited and paid, and it fills quickly on weekends between 11 am and 3 pm. Arriving early solves most problems.
- Stay overnight if you can: the meadow after the day-trippers leave, and at sunrise, is a different place entirely. A handful of hotels and a state tourism property sit around the glade.
- Protect the turf: avoid littering and do not drive or ride on the meadow outside the marked areas.
- Clothing: cool days even in summer, cold nights, and serious winter clothing from December to February.
- Operators and fees: horse rides, zorbing and short paragliding hops are run by local operators with their own rates; sanctuary areas may have small entry fees. Confirm on the spot.
- Connectivity: mobile signal can drop in the Kalatop forest; download offline maps and your booking confirmation.
- Monsoon caution: in July and August the meadow can be soggy and slippery; wear shoes with grip and keep children away from the lake edge, where the turf is soft.
