How do you reach Vagamon by road from Kochi?
Vagamon is about 105 km east of Kochi, typically a 3-hour drive via Muvattupuzha, Thodupuzha and the Moolamattom ghat. One way, the minimum fare applies: Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve with a chauffeur-driven sedan, Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve with an Innova Crysta, before 5% GST. A same-day return is billed on the 250 km minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan, Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova.
Munnar gets the crowds; Vagamon gets the mist. Sitting at roughly 1,100 metres on the border of Idukki and Kottayam districts, it is a plateau of open grassland, tea, cardamom and a tall plantation of pine, broken by rocky outcrops that fall away steeply to the west. On a clear evening you can see the plains of central Kerala glowing towards the sea; on most monsoon afternoons you cannot see the bonnet of your car. There is no crowded bazaar, no Mall Road, just viewpoints, a few good resorts and long quiet walks. That is precisely why it has become the favourite weekend escape for Kochi families and for couples who find Munnar too busy.
This guide covers the two ghat roads up, the sights on the plateau, the seasons, a sample itinerary and the RutzIndia.com fares for one-way drops, weekend round trips and group vans. For a wider Kerala circuit that adds Vagamon to Munnar and Thekkady, see our Kerala tour by car.

What to see on the Vagamon plateau
Vagamon is small, and your driver will cover its highlights in a relaxed day, but each spot needs time on foot.
- The meadows (Moottakunnu and around): soft, rounded hills of short grass where everyone ends up walking, flying kites or simply sitting. They are gentle enough for children and grandparents.
- The pine forest: a planted stand of tall pines along the road towards the meadows, dark and cool, with a carpet of needles. Photographers come at first light when mist hangs between the trunks.
- Kolahalamedu and the paragliding hills: the grassy ridges here are used for tandem paragliding when the wind and season allow, and the adventure park area has added attractions in recent years, including a cantilevered glass viewing bridge. Operators and permissions change, so ask the desk to check what is running on your dates.
- The three hills of three faiths: Kurisumala, a hill with a cross that Christian pilgrims climb, especially in Lent and on Good Friday; Thangalpara, a rocky hill with a Sufi saint's shrine; and Murugan Mala, with a rock-cut Murugan temple. Local lore delights in the fact that they stand within sight of one another.
- Tea and cardamom: small estates line the roads towards Elappara and Kuttikkanam, and several sell loose tea and spices at the gate.
- Marmala waterfall, lower down near Teekoy on the Erattupetta side, is worth a short detour in and after the monsoon.
Food is simple: resort kitchens, tea shops with parotta and beef or egg curry, and Kerala meals at lunch. Carry snacks for the meadows.
The road up: two ghats and one important choice
There are two classic ways onto the plateau from Kochi, and a good chauffeur will choose between them based on rain, time of day and where you sleep.
Via Thodupuzha and Moolamattom (about 105 km). From Kochi you drive east through Kolenchery or Perumbavoor to Muvattupuzha, then south-east to Thodupuzha on a busy but decent state highway. Beyond Moolamattom, home of the underground powerhouse of the Idukki hydro-electric project, the road climbs through a steep series of hairpins onto the plateau. It is narrow in places, with sheer drops and heavy local buses, so it rewards a patient driver and is not a road to rush in the dark.
Via Kottayam, Pala and Erattupetta (about 120 km). Longer, but many drivers prefer it in heavy rain. After Pala and Erattupetta the Teekoy ghat winds up past rubber estates and waterfalls to reach Vagamon from the south-west. It connects well if you are coming from the Kumarakom backwaters; see Kumarakom by road.
Road notes that apply to both:
- Monsoon (June to September): small landslips, falling rocks and fog. The district sometimes restricts night travel on high-range roads during red alerts. Advisories are on the Idukki district website.
- Engine braking on the descent is standard practice for our drivers; do not be surprised by low gears and a slower pace.
- Fuel at Thodupuzha or Erattupetta; pumps are fewer on the plateau.
- Motion sickness: the hairpins are frequent. Sit in front, eat lightly before the climb, and ask the driver for a stop at a viewpoint halfway up.

When to go, and what the weather does
- September to November: post-monsoon green, waterfalls still flowing, clearer afternoons. Arguably the best time.
- December to February: cool, crisp mornings, cold nights by Kerala standards, and the clearest views. Christmas and New Year weekends are busy and resort rates rise.
- March to May: warm days but still comfortable on the plateau, a useful escape from the heat of the plains during summer holidays.
- June to August: heavy south-west monsoon. Beautiful mist and drama, but views are rare, the ghats demand care, and the meadows turn to mud.
Holy Week brings pilgrims to Kurisumala, and Onam and Christmas bring Kerala's holiday traffic. Weekdays outside those dates are wonderfully empty. General destination information is on Kerala Tourism.

Suggested itineraries by car
Day one, Kochi to Vagamon (about 105 km). Leave Kochi after breakfast, climb the Moolamattom ghat before noon, check in, then spend the late afternoon in the pine forest and on the meadows as the light softens.
Day two, around the plateau (30 to 40 km). Sunrise at a western viewpoint, Kurisumala or Thangalpara in the cool morning, Kolahalamedu and the adventure park area around midday, tea estates in the afternoon.
Day three, onward (roughly 45 to 110 km). Either drive south-east via Elappara and Kuttikkanam to Thekkady for Periyar (read Thekkady by road), or north-east to Munnar for the tea country (Munnar by road), or back down to Kochi or Kumarakom. With the same car the whole way, luggage stays put.
Who Vagamon suits, and who should skip it
Vagamon rewards people who like to slow down. Couples on an anniversary weekend, families with young children who need space to run, writers and remote workers who want two quiet days with a view, and office teams on a short retreat all come back happy. Photographers love it in the shoulder months, when mist drifts through the pines and the grass turns silver in the low sun.
It is less suited to travellers who want a busy town with shopping, nightlife and a long list of ticketed attractions; they will be happier in Munnar or back in Fort Kochi. It is also a tiring detour for anyone with only a single free day in Kerala, because half of that day goes on the ghats. And if a family member suffers badly from motion sickness, the Erattupetta approach, with gentler bends in its lower section, is the kinder choice; mention it when you book and we will route the car that way.
NRI families visiting relatives in Kottayam, Pala or Thodupuzha often slip Vagamon into the middle of a home visit, since the plateau is barely an hour or two from these towns. We can pick up from a family home anywhere in central Kerala and quote the leg by the kilometre.
Practical tips for Vagamon
- Stay: book resorts well ahead for December and long weekends; the plateau has limited rooms.
- Clothes: a light fleece for evenings year-round, a proper jacket from December to February, rain shells in the monsoon.
- Paragliding: only with a licensed operator and only when the season and wind are right; the desk can check.
- Walking: the rocky outcrops have unfenced drops. Keep children close and do not climb in fog.
- Leeches: common in the wet months in the forest patches.
- Network: mobile signal is patchy away from the main junction; agree a pickup time with your chauffeur before walking off.
- Around Kochi before or after: if you have an evening in the city, a local 4 hr / 40 km sedan is Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve; see car rental with driver in Kochi or our Kochi taxi service.
For office retreats, large family groups or a Vagamon-Thekkady-Munnar loop, the travel desk will build and price the whole route.
