How do you get to the Sundarbans by road from Kolkata?
By car you drive about 110 km south-east from Kolkata to the Godkhali or Sonakhali jetty via Canning and Basanti, typically a 3-hour trip, and continue into the mangroves by licensed boat. A RutzIndia.com sedan costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,570 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies), before 5% GST, with tolls and jetty parking at actual cost.
Nothing about the Sundarbans resembles an ordinary road trip. For the first two hours out of Kolkata you pass paddy fields, fish ponds and brick kilns; then the road simply stops at a muddy riverbank, and the rest of your journey is by boat through a maze of tidal creeks where the forest grows out of the water. This is the delta of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna, shared between India and Bangladesh, home to the Royal Bengal tiger, saltwater crocodiles, spotted deer, kingfishers by the dozen and communities who fish, farm and collect honey on the forest's edge. The Indian side, protected as the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, is also inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Your car's job is to get you to the water quickly and safely and to be there, engine cool and boot open, when you step off the boat a day or two later. This guide explains that road, the permit and boat system, the seasons, and how RutzIndia.com prices the transfer.

What a Sundarbans trip actually involves
Most visitors book a one-night or two-night package with a licensed boat operator or a lodge on one of the inhabited islands such as Gosaba, Pakhiralaya, Bali or Dayapur. The package usually includes meals on the boat, a guide and the forest entry. Days are spent cruising the creeks and stopping at forest-department watchtowers, where you climb and scan the mud banks for tracks, deer, monitor lizards and, with luck, a tiger.
Places you are likely to see on the itinerary:
- Sajnekhali: the main watchtower complex and interpretation centre, where many entry formalities are handled.
- Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki: watchtowers near sweet-water ponds; Dobanki is known for its raised canopy walk through the mangroves.
- Netidhopani: a deeper-forest site with the ruins of an old temple, on longer trips.
- Pakhiralaya and Gosaba villages: the human side of the delta, with embankments, ponds and small markets; Gosaba has the heritage bungalow associated with Sir Daniel Hamilton's cooperative experiment.
- Jharkhali: an alternative gateway reached by road via Basanti, with a watchtower and a tiger rescue enclosure.
Boats do not navigate at night inside the forest, you never step off except at fenced watchtowers, and all rules are set by the forest department. The official source for entry, permits and notices is the Sundarban Tiger Reserve website. Tiger sightings are genuinely rare; the Sundarbans rewards those who enjoy the landscape, the birds and the silence of the creeks.
The road from Kolkata: Canning, Basanti and the jetties
There are three common road gateways, and your boat operator decides which one:
- Godkhali jetty (about 100 to 110 km): the most used, reached via the Basanti highway through Sonarpur, Ghatakpukur side roads or Canning, depending on where you start. Boats from Godkhali head to Gosaba, Pakhiralaya and Sajnekhali.
- Sonakhali (Basanti) jetty (about 100 km): close by, used by many launches and lodges.
- Jharkhali (about 110 km): a separate spur south from Basanti, for groups staying at Jharkhali or starting their cruise there.
From central Kolkata the route runs south along the EM Bypass or out through Garia and Sonarpur, then on two-lane state roads through Baruipur-area villages towards Canning, the historic port town on the Matla river, and on to Basanti. The road is narrow and busy with trekkers (motor vans), cycle-rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and buses; it is not fast, but it is fascinating, and your driver will know the tea stalls with clean toilets. Allow about 3 hours, more on weekend mornings leaving the city.
Driving notes:
- Start early: boats aim to leave the jetty by late morning to make use of the tide and daylight.
- Parking at the jetty: vehicles park in local lots near the ghat; the fee is paid at actual cost, and your chauffeur either waits with the car or returns to Kolkata and comes back for the pickup.
- Luggage: pack for a boat, soft bags rather than hard suitcases; the step down to the launch can be muddy at low tide.
- Monsoon and cyclones: the delta is exposed to Bay of Bengal storms, notably from May to June and October to November. Operators cancel cruises on warnings; so should you.

When to go to the Sundarbans
- November to February: the ideal window. Cool, dry, calm water and good birding, with migratory species in winter. Christmas and New Year are the busiest dates.
- March to May: hot and humid, but tiger sightings are sometimes reported more often as animals come to sweet-water ponds. Honey collection season brings its own drama in the villages.
- June to September: monsoon rain and rough water; many operators reduce schedules, and some forest areas close for the breeding season.
- October: transitional, and Durga Puja holidays bring Kolkata families; cyclone watch applies.

What RutzIndia.com offers for the Sundarbans
- Jetty transfer out and back: drop at Godkhali, Sonakhali or Jharkhali on day one, pickup at the same ghat when your boat returns.
- Car waits at the jetty: for a one-night trip some guests prefer the chauffeur to stay near the ghat, billed as a two-day round trip with a night allowance.
- Airport to jetty: land at Kolkata, go straight to the delta. We follow the flight and keep a free hour after international arrivals, half an hour after domestic ones.
- Group transport for photography clubs, schools and office outings in a Tempo Traveller or mini bus; see Tempo Traveller in Kolkata.
- Kolkata city days before or after, by the hour package; our Kolkata taxi service page lists city fares.
| Vehicle | Kolkata to Godkhali one way (110 km) | One return run, same day (250 km floor) | Two-day trip, drop and pickup (500 km floor) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swift Dzire or similar sedan | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga / Carens MUV | Rs 4,710 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross | Rs 6,570 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller (12 to 17 seats) | Rs 10,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
A note on reading these numbers. The sedan drop is a plain 110 km at Rs 36, but the Ertiga, Innova and Tempo Traveller would price below the Kolkata floor for their class, so the minimum fare applies to those three. A drop-and-return run from Kolkata covers about 220 km, which falls under our 250 km touring-day floor, so each such day is billed at 250 km. For a one-night cruise, two days cost the same whether the chauffeur drives home in between or stays near the ghat; if he stays, add his night allowance, and in exchange you get a car on standby if the boat returns early or you want a detour to Canning on the way back. Everything is quoted before 5% GST. Road tolls and ghat parking go on the bill at cost, and the chauffeur's night allowance runs between Rs 900 and Rs 1,800 Pay Now to Reserve. Our cars are no more than four model years old. Should plans change, cancelling three days or more ahead is free; after that we retain 10%, then 50% inside 48 hours and the whole fare inside 24 hours or on a no-show. The cancellation policy spells it out, and a cyclone warning is always a reason to reschedule, not to charge.
Book a Kolkata to Sundarbans jetty car

Choosing a car for the delta run
The Sundarbans road is not a highway, so the vehicle matters more than the distance suggests. A sedan is fine for two or three people with soft bags, and it slips past the motor vans in village bazaars easily. Families of five or six with cameras, tripods and a cool box are better off in an Ertiga or an Innova Crysta, whose higher seating also makes the bumpy last stretch before Basanti more comfortable.
Photography clubs and birding groups tend to travel with a lot of kit and like to stay together, which is where a Tempo Traveller earns its fare; it parks at the ghats without trouble. Very large groups, such as college field trips, should tell us early, because the approach lanes near some jetties are tight for a full-size bus, and we may suggest two smaller vehicles instead of one big one.
A two-day plan with the car
Day one (about 110 km by road). Pickup in Kolkata at 6.30 am, breakfast of kachori and tea on the way, Canning by about 8.30, the jetty by 9.30. Board the boat, cruise to Sajnekhali for entry formalities and the watchtower, lunch on deck, and an afternoon of creeks before mooring or checking in to a lodge at Pakhiralaya.
Day two (about 110 km by road). Dawn cruise when the birds are busiest, Sudhanyakhali or Dobanki watchtower, lunch on board, and back at the jetty by mid-afternoon. Your chauffeur meets you at the ghat, and you are back in Kolkata for dinner.
Longer stays. A three-day cruise reaches deeper sites like Netidhopani. Follow it with the beach: Digha by road and Mandarmani by road are on the other side of Kolkata, and our Kolkata road guide covers the city itself.
Practical tips for the delta
- ID: carry photo ID for every traveller; foreign nationals need their passport for forest entry.
- Mosquitoes: repellent, long sleeves and light colours, especially at dusk.
- Sun and water: hats, sunglasses and sunscreen; the glare off the creeks is strong.
- Binoculars and a long lens: most wildlife is seen across the water at a distance.
- Respect the rules: stay inside the fenced areas, never ask boatmen to land elsewhere, and keep noise down.
- Plastic: carry reusable bottles; the forest department discourages plastic in the reserve.
- Booking: pay for the car by card or UPI when you book online; company outings get a GST invoice. If you need a car for several days of city and delta together, see car rental with driver in Kolkata.
