How far is the Statue of Unity from Ahmedabad by road?
The Statue of Unity at Ekta Nagar (Kevadia) is about 200 km from Ahmedabad, typically 3.5 to 4 hours via the Vadodara expressway and Dabhoi, and about 90 km from Vadodara. A RutzIndia.com sedan from Ahmedabad costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve one way or Rs 14,400 Pay Now to Reserve for a same-day return, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking at actual cost.
At 182 metres, the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is the tallest in the world, roughly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty including its base. It stands on Sadhu Bet, a rocky island in the Narmada just downstream of the Sardar Sarovar dam, and since its inauguration on 31 October 2018 the whole valley around it has been turned into a destination: flower valleys, a zoological park, riverside walks, boating, a nightly laser show and a cluster of hotels and tent cities.
It is a place built for the road. The nearest airport is at Vadodara, rail connections to Ekta Nagar are limited, and the attractions are spread along several kilometres of the valley. A car with driver from Ahmedabad or Vadodara lets you set your own pace, reach the ticket gate at opening and stay for the evening show without worrying about the drive back. This guide covers the route, the sights, when to go, and what RutzIndia.com charges.

What to see at Ekta Nagar
The statue and viewing gallery. Lifts carry visitors up to a gallery inside the chest of the statue, around 150 metres above the river, with views of the dam, the Vindhya and Satpura ranges and the Narmada winding away downstream. The base houses an exhibition and a museum on Patel's life and the integration of the princely states.
Sardar Sarovar dam viewpoint. One of the largest concrete gravity dams in India. In a good monsoon, when the gates open in August or September, the spillway is a thunderous sight.
Valley of Flowers. Terraced gardens along the riverbank, planted with hundreds of thousands of flowering plants and at their best in the cooler months.
Jungle Safari and gardens. A large zoological park on the hillside, plus a cactus garden, butterfly garden, Arogya Van herbal garden and a children's nutrition park with a toy train. Families easily spend half a day here.
Laser and light show. Each evening, except on closing days, a projection show on the statue and dam tells Patel's story; it is one of the best reasons to stay the night.
On the water. Boat rides on the reservoir, the Ekta Cruise on the Narmada and seasonal white-water rafting downstream give a different view of the statue.
Around the valley. The Zarwani eco-tourism site in the Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary has a forest waterfall and trails; the old princely town of Rajpipla, about 25 km away, has palaces worth a slow drive through.
Tickets, time slots, closing days (the statue has usually closed on Mondays) and current prices are published on the official Statue of Unity website. Buy online before you set out, because weekend and holiday slots for the viewing gallery sell out.
The drive from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Mumbai
From Ahmedabad (about 200 km, 3.5 to 4 hours). The fast way is the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway to Vadodara, then south-east on the state highway through Dabhoi and Tilakwada to Ekta Nagar. After Vadodara the road is two- and four-lane through farmland and small towns, generally well maintained because of the tourist traffic. Leave Ahmedabad by 6.30 am to be at the gate as the first slots open. Our Ahmedabad road guide covers pickups across the city.
From Vadodara (about 90 km, 2 hours). Vadodara airport and railway station are the usual arrival points for visitors from elsewhere in India. On the way, the UNESCO-listed Champaner–Pavagadh archaeological park is a detour of an hour or so for history lovers.
From Surat (about 160 km, 3.5 hours) via Ankleshwar and Rajpipla, a pleasant route that approaches the valley from the south.
From Mumbai (about 420 km, 8 hours) via NH 48 to Bharuch, then east through Rajpipla. Mumbai families often do this as a two-night trip, stopping at Surat or continuing to Ahmedabad; see taxi service in Mumbai for pickups.
Private cars stop at the designated parking areas in the valley, and visitors then move between the statue, gardens and viewpoints on the official buses that run on a loop; check the current arrangements and bus passes on the official site. Your driver waits in the lot and meets you at the exit you choose.

When to go: seasons and big days
October to March is the most comfortable time, with warm days, cool evenings and the flower valley in bloom. Winter weekends and the Diwali holidays bring big crowds, so book gallery slots early.
31 October, National Unity Day and Patel's birth anniversary, sees official celebrations and a parade at Ekta Nagar; access can be restricted around the event. Check the Narmada district website for public notices before travelling that week.
April to June is hot, often above 40°C, so arrive at opening, do the statue and indoor exhibits first and rest through midday. The monsoon, July to September, turns the valley green and may bring the dam spillway into action; it is a beautiful time, though some outdoor activities pause in heavy rain.

Suggested itineraries by car
Same day from Ahmedabad (about 400 km). Pickup at 6.30 am, breakfast at a highway stop past Vadodara, statue and viewing gallery by 10.30, Valley of Flowers and dam viewpoint, lunch in the valley, a couple of hours at the Jungle Safari, and back on the road by 4 pm to reach Ahmedabad around 8. It is a full day; children tire quickly in the heat.
Two days with the laser show (about 450 to 500 km). Day one: drive down, afternoon at the statue and gardens, check in at a valley hotel or tent city, laser show at dusk. Day two: Ekta Cruise or rafting in the morning, Zarwani waterfall or Rajpipla, and return to Ahmedabad by evening.
Who each plan suits. The same-day run works for couples and business travellers with a free Sunday. Families with young children or grandparents are far happier on the two-day plan, because the midday heat and queues are what wear people out, not the drive itself. School and college groups usually travel by Tempo Traveller or mini bus on a same-day plan with a fixed timetable, and corporate teams often add a team dinner at a valley resort and return the next morning.
Three days combined with Vadodara and Champaner. Add Vadodara's Laxmi Vilas Palace and the Champaner–Pavagadh ruins on the way down or back. For a longer loop, continue south to the hill station of Saputara, roughly 250 km away.
Practical tips for Ekta Nagar
- Tickets first. Book viewing-gallery slots online before you leave; turning up without one at a weekend can mean a long wait or no gallery at all.
- Closing days. The statue has generally been closed on Mondays; verify on the official site for your date.
- Heat and shade. Carry water, caps and sunscreen. The walk from bus stops to the statue is exposed.
- Bags and security. Expect airport-style security at the statue entrance; large bags may not be allowed inside.
- Food. The valley has food courts and hotel restaurants; most serve vegetarian Gujarati food, and Gujarat's prohibition laws apply.
- Stay. Hotels and tent camps in the valley fill up on long weekends and in the Diwali break; book them before the car.
- Older travellers. Lifts serve the viewing gallery, and the valley buses reduce walking, but distances inside the gardens and safari park are considerable. Plan fewer attractions and more rest, and let the driver shuttle you between parking areas where permitted.
- Onward Gujarat trips. Ekta Nagar fits neatly at the start or end of a longer Gujarat circuit; from Ahmedabad the Saurashtra coast and the temple town of Dwarka are the next big drive west.
