Getting to Patnitop by road: the short answer
Patnitop lies about 110 km from Jammu, usually a 3-hour climb via Nagrota, Udhampur and Kud on the old highway. With RutzIndia.com a sedan drop is Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies), GST at 5% extra. A return the same day is charged as one 250 km outstation day: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in the sedan.
When the Chenani–Nashri tunnel opened in 2017, most traffic between Jammu and Srinagar stopped climbing over Patnitop, and the little hill station on its forested ridge became quieter and, for many visitors, nicer. At a little over 2,000 metres, Patnitop is a broad plateau of deodar and blue pine with grassy clearings, views down to the Chenab and across to the Pir Panjal, and enough snow in winter to feel like a proper mountain holiday without the long haul to Gulmarg.
It is the easiest hill escape from Jammu and the most natural add-on to a Vaishno Devi pilgrimage: after two days of climbing and queuing in Katra, a night in the pines is exactly what most families want. This guide explains which road to take (not the tunnel), what to see, when to go and what our chauffeured options cost. If you are starting at the shrine, see Katra and Vaishno Devi by road first.

Choosing the road: old highway, not the tunnel
From Jammu, head north on NH44 through Nagrota and past the Jhajjar Kotli turn to Udhampur (about 65 km), the army town at the foot of the hills. Continue to Chenani. Here the highway dives into the nine-kilometre tunnel and emerges at Nashri beyond the ridge, which is the right choice if you are going to Srinagar and the wrong one for Patnitop.
For Patnitop, stay on the old road that winds up from Chenani through Kud, a roadside town famous for its sweet shops and its patisa, to the Patnitop plateau. The climb is a series of well-graded hairpins through forest; traffic is light now that trucks use the tunnel. From Patnitop the old road continues down to Batote, where it rejoins NH44 for Ramban, Banihal and the Kashmir valley, so you can include Patnitop on a Jammu to Srinagar drive at the cost of an hour or two.
From Katra, you rejoin NH44 near Udhampur via the Katra–Udhampur road; Patnitop is about 100 km away, around 3 hours.
Road conditions are generally good. In December to February, snowfall on the Kud–Patnitop–Batote stretch can close the road temporarily or require chains, and in the monsoon, landslides on the lower slopes cause occasional delays. Our drivers check the traffic advisory the evening before.
What to see around Patnitop
- The plateau itself. Short walks through the deodar forest, picnic meadows and viewpoints over the Chenab valley. The Naag temple, a small old shrine in the forest, is a pleasant stroll from the main road.
- Nathatop (about 12 km). A higher meadow above Patnitop with broad views of the Pir Panjal and, in winter, the best snow for sledging and beginner skiing. The road up is narrow; your chauffeur will judge conditions.
- Sanasar (about 20 km). A cup-shaped meadow surrounded by forest, used for paragliding in the season and for horse rides. Gujjar shepherd camps dot the slopes in summer.
- Kud. Stop for patisa, kalari cheese and tea. The sweet shops here have been feeding travellers on the old highway for generations.
- Shiv Khori and Sudh Mahadev. For pilgrims, the Sudh Mahadev Shiva temple lies off the Chenani road, and the cave shrine of Shiv Khori is reached from the Reasi side; both can be combined with a Katra and Patnitop trip if you add a day.
The Udhampur district administration keeps visitor information for the Patnitop area on the Udhampur district website.

When to visit Patnitop
- March to June: clear spring days, wildflowers in the meadows and cool evenings. The main holiday season for plains families escaping the Jammu heat.
- July to September: monsoon mist and rain; green and atmospheric, but views come and go and landslides can slow the drive.
- October and November: crisp and bright, with the best long-distance views.
- December to February: snow. Patnitop and Nathatop turn white, and weekend crowds from Jammu arrive for snow play. Carry chains, dress for sub-zero nights and keep plans flexible in case the road is closed after heavy falls.

A night up the hill adds the chauffeur's allowance of Rs 1,500, and any return journey is costed on 250 km per calendar day unless you actually drive more. We only send cars no more than four model years old. Reserve through the online booker using a card or UPI; businesses booking staff breaks receive a GST invoice. On cancellations, our policy is the same everywhere: free if you tell us over 72 hours ahead, then 10% of the fare within 72 hours, 50% within 48 and the whole fare within 24 hours or on a no-show.

Who Patnitop is for, and a word on food
Patnitop is not a place of big sights. Its appeal is slower: a long walk under the deodars with only woodpeckers for company, a book on a hotel lawn with the Pir Panjal on the horizon, children seeing snow for the first time at Nathatop. That makes it ideal for three kinds of traveller.
Pilgrim families coming off the Vaishno Devi climb, who want a restful night before the drive home; our pilgrimage taxi bookings often end here. Jammu residents and army families looking for a weekend break within half a day's drive. And Kashmir-bound travellers who would rather split the highway into two gentle stages than sit in the car for eight hours.
Food on the plateau is simple and good. Hotel kitchens serve North Indian staples alongside Dogra dishes such as rajma with local rice, ambal (a sweet-sour pumpkin curry) and kalari, the pan-fried cheese of the Udhampur hills. Kud's sweet shops are the essential stop for patisa to carry home. Tea stalls along the ridge road stay open through the day, and in snow season the smell of roasting corn fills the lay-bys. If you need special meals for elders or children, tell the hotel a day ahead; supplies come up from Udhampur.
For longer circuits that continue into Punjab or Himachal after Patnitop, the fares work exactly like any other outstation cab booking: per km, with the same car throughout.
Three ways to plan it
A weekend from Jammu (about 250 km). Saturday: leave Jammu after breakfast, patisa and tea in Kud, lunch on the plateau, afternoon walk in the forest. Sunday: morning at Nathatop or Sanasar, back in Jammu by evening.
Vaishno Devi plus Patnitop (about 330 km over three days). Day 1 Jammu to Katra, day 2 the yatra, day 3 Katra to Patnitop for a restful night, day 4 back to Jammu. The Jammu to Katra taxi page covers the first leg on its own.
Jammu to Srinagar the slow way (about 290 km). Day 1 Jammu to Patnitop via Kud; day 2 Patnitop down to Batote, then Ramban, Banihal and into the valley. It turns a long transit into two gentle days. For wider Kashmir circuits, see the Kashmir taxi service.
Practical tips
- Accommodation. Patnitop has a mix of government huts, small hotels and a few resorts spread along the ridge; book ahead for snow weekends and summer holidays.
- Winter driving. Chains may be needed after snowfall; we fit them when required and bill the cost at actual. Allow extra daylight on the return.
- Pony and paragliding operators at Sanasar and Nathatop set their own rates; confirm before you start.
- Clothing. Even in May, evenings are cool. In winter, pack thermals, gloves and waterproof boots.
- Parking. Roadside parking near the viewpoints is limited on weekends; your chauffeur will drop you and park where permitted.
- Heading west instead? If you like the idea of pine hills without the Kashmir highway, Dalhousie in Himachal is a comparable drive from Pathankot; see Dalhousie by road. Broader tourism information for India is on Incredible India.
