How do you reach Jim Corbett by road from Delhi?
Jim Corbett National Park is reached through Ramnagar, about 260 km from Delhi by road via Moradabad and Kashipur, typically 6 to 7 hours with one meal stop. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 9,360 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 14,820 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking billed at actual cost.
Corbett is the weekend escape Delhi families, school groups and office teams talk about most, and with good reason. It is India's oldest national park, set up in 1936 as Hailey National Park and later renamed after Jim Corbett, the hunter-turned-conservationist who knew these Kumaon foothills better than anyone. Sal forest, grassland chaurs and the braided Ramganga river make it one of the best places in the country to see a wild tiger, and the elephant herds, gharials and more than five hundred recorded bird species mean a safari is rarely wasted even when the big cat stays hidden.
There is no airport or railhead inside the park, and the safari gates are spread across a wide arc of forest, so a car with a driver is simply the most practical way to do it. RutzIndia.com runs one-way drops from Delhi, NCR and the Pantnagar airport, round trips that stay with you for the whole weekend, and larger vehicles for groups. You can book a Corbett cab online and pay by card or UPI through the booker.

What to see and do around Corbett
The safari is the headline, but the Ramnagar side of the park has plenty to fill a second morning or a rainy afternoon.
- Jeep safaris in the zones. Corbett is divided into safari zones, each with its own gate. Bijrani and Jhirna are the names most first-timers hear; Dhela, Durga Devi and Garjia are the others commonly offered, and Dhikala, deep inside on the Ramganga, is the famous one for overnight stays at the forest lodge. Safaris run in the early morning and late afternoon in open Gypsies driven by registered park drivers with a naturalist guide.
- Garjia Devi temple. A small shrine perched on a rock in the middle of the Kosi river, about 14 km from Ramnagar on the Ranikhet road. It is busiest on Kartik Purnima, when a fair gathers on the riverbank.
- Corbett Museum, Kaladhungi. Jim Corbett's old winter home, about 30 km from Ramnagar towards Nainital, now holds his letters, photographs and a few personal belongings. Nearby Chhoti Haldwani is the village he helped lay out for his tenants.
- Corbett Falls. A short forest walk off the Kaladhungi road leads to a waterfall that makes a cool stop on a hot afternoon.
- The Kosi riverbank. Most resorts line the Kosi between Dhikuli and Mohan. A slow walk along the stones at dawn, with kingfishers and wagtails working the shallows, is one of the nicest free things to do.
- Sitabani. A forest area outside the tiger reserve boundary, reached through the Bhandarpani side, known for birding and a Sita temple tied to local Ramayana legend.
The state's official Uttarakhand Tourism portal lists more of the Kumaon foothills if you want to stretch the trip. Food runs to resort buffets and dhaba classics on the highway, but Ramnagar market has good sweet shops and simple Kumaoni thalis with bhatt ki dal and aloo ke gutke if you ask around.
The drive: Delhi to Ramnagar, stage by stage
Your chauffeur will usually leave Delhi early to beat the Ghaziabad traffic and reach the resort before lunch.
Delhi to Moradabad
From east Delhi the car takes the Delhi-Meerut Expressway towards Dasna, then NH9 through Hapur, over the Ganga at Garhmukteshwar and on past Gajraula. This is a fast four-lane stretch with tolls, big dhaba complexes and fuel every few kilometres. Gajraula is the usual breakfast halt. Traffic swells around Garhmukteshwar during the Kartik Purnima bathing fair and the Kanwar season in July, so expect slower progress then.
Moradabad to Kashipur and Ramnagar
After the Moradabad bypass the road turns north through Thakurdwara towards Kashipur and then Ramnagar. The last 80 km or so are two-lane state roads through sugarcane country, slower in the crushing season when laden tractors and bullock carts share the lane. Allow about 6 to 7 hours in total from central Delhi; from Gurgaon or Noida add 30 to 60 minutes depending on the hour.
From the airport or railhead
Pantnagar airport has limited daily flights and sits roughly 80 km from Ramnagar, about two hours by road. Ramnagar has its own railway station at the end of a branch line, and Kathgodam, the Kumaon railhead, is a little under 3 hours away. We meet trains and flights with a name board and track arrival times so the driver is there when you are.

Best time to visit, seasons and closures
Corbett's calendar is set by the forest department, not the tourist season, so plan around it.
- Mid-November to February. Cool, misty mornings and clear afternoons. This is when the core zones, including Dhikala, are fully open, and the migratory birds are in. Carry proper woollens: a 6 am safari in an open Gypsy in January is genuinely cold.
- March to June. The forest thins out, water sources shrink and animals come to them, which is why many regulars rate April and May as the best tiger months. Daytime heat in the plains stretch of the drive can touch the forties, so an air-conditioned car earns its keep.
- Monsoon (roughly July to mid-October). Most core zones, Dhikala and Bijrani among them, close for the rains. Jhirna and Dhela usually stay open for safaris, and the forest is at its greenest, but river crossings can shut at short notice.
Exact opening and closing dates change from year to year, so confirm them on the official Corbett Tiger Reserve booking site before you fix your dates. Diwali, Christmas-New Year and long weekends sell out safari permits weeks ahead.
Safari permits and the park rules you should know
Private cars, including ours, cannot drive into the safari zones. You need a safari permit and an authorised Gypsy, and these are separate from your road transport.
- Book permits online on the forest department site in the name of each guest, with the ID you will carry. Permits for popular zones open well in advance and go quickly.
- Book a registered Gypsy and guide through your resort or the permit system; they collect you from the resort or meet you at the gate.
- Carry the same photo ID you used while booking. Gate staff check it.
- No plastic, no music, no getting out of the vehicle inside the zones. Wear muted colours and keep voices low.
Your RutzIndia.com driver takes you to the gate or resort, waits or returns at the agreed time, and handles everything outside the park, including the Kaladhungi and Garjia side trips.

Which car suits which trip:
- Couples and small families are fine in a compact sedan, and the highway is smooth enough for it.
- Families of five or six with safari kit should take an Innova Crysta on rent; the boot swallows camera bags and winter jackets.
- Office offsites, birthday groups and school trips usually book a Tempo Traveller on rent or, from Delhi, a Tempo Traveller in Delhi with 12 to 26 seats. Larger groups can move up to a mini bus.
- Guests combining Corbett with the hills can extend into Nainital or Ranikhet; see our Delhi to Nainital taxi page for that leg.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% is charged within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on a no-show, as set out in our cancellation policy. All our cars are within four model years.
A relaxed 3-day Corbett itinerary by car
Day 1: Delhi to Ramnagar (about 260 km). Leave by 6 am, breakfast at Gajraula, arrive at a Kosi-side resort around lunchtime. Afternoon at Garjia Devi temple and the riverbank. Early night.
Day 2: Safaris and Kaladhungi (about 70 km of local driving). Morning safari in your booked zone. After lunch, the driver takes you to the Corbett Museum at Kaladhungi and Corbett Falls, back in time for an evening safari or a bonfire.
Day 3: Morning safari and return (about 270 km). A last dawn drive, brunch, and away by 11 am to reach Delhi in the evening. Want the hills too? Swap the return for a climb to Nainital, about 65 km from Ramnagar via Kaladhungi, and read our Nainital by road guide or the gentler Ranikhet by road guide for the next leg.
Practical tips for a Corbett road trip
- Resort location matters. Resorts near Dhikuli are close to Ramnagar and the Bijrani gate; those near Dhela or Jhirna save a pre-dawn drive for those zones. Share your booking with us so the driver plans the timing.
- Leave early on the return. Sunday evening traffic into Ghaziabad and the UP Gate border can add two hours.
- Pack for dust and cold. A scarf, a cap and a light jacket even in April; thermal layers from December to February.
- Cash and network. Mobile coverage inside the forest is patchy. Carry some cash for tips and small purchases at the gates.
- Wildlife on the highway. Your driver slows down on the forest stretches near Kaladhungi and Mohan, where elephants and deer cross, especially at dusk.
- Staying longer in Delhi? Our taxi service in Delhi covers airport runs and local 8 hr/80 km hire before or after the trip.
