Getting to Chilika Lake by road
Chilika's Barkul jetty is about 100 km south of Bhubaneswar on NH16, typically 2 to 2.5 hours by car; Satapada, for the dolphins, is about 50 km from Puri. RutzIndia.com charges Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve one way by sedan and Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova Crysta from Bhubaneswar, the minimum fare for each class, before 5% GST, or Rs 9,000 by sedan for a day return.
Chilika is not one destination but a shoreline of more than a hundred kilometres wrapped around India's largest brackish-water lagoon. Its northern and western edges are fed by rivers; its eastern side is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long, thin sandbar; and a narrow mouth near Satapada lets the tide in and out. The mix of fresh and salt water supports a remarkable food web: prawns, crabs and fish that feed thousands of fishing families, a small population of Irrawaddy dolphins, and, every winter, flocks of migratory ducks, waders and flamingos that make it one of the most important bird habitats in the country. It was among the first Indian wetlands listed under the Ramsar Convention.
Because the lagoon is so big, where you go depends on what you want to see, and that decides the road. This guide sorts out the four main access points, the best season for dolphins and birds, how RutzIndia.com prices a Chilika day trip from Bhubaneswar or Puri, and how to fit it into a wider Odisha journey. You can book online with UPI or card.

Which side of Chilika? Four places to start
Satapada (east shore, near Puri). The launch point for Irrawaddy dolphin watching in the channels near the lagoon mouth, and for boats to Rajhans, the sandbar island where the lagoon meets the sea. The Chilika Development Authority runs boats here alongside local operators. Best reached from Puri, about 50 km along a road through villages and prawn farms.
Barkul and Balugaon (west shore, on NH16). The traditional base, with a state tourism lodge, boats to Kalijai, a small island temple to the goddess that is the focus of a fair at Makar Sankranti in January, and to the Nalabana bird sanctuary island in winter. Barkul is the easiest point to reach from Bhubaneswar.
Rambha (south-west shore). About 30 km further south on NH16, with a quieter, hill-backed bay and the tiny Breakfast Island, where a British-era building still stands. It suits travellers heading on towards Gopalpur and southern Odisha.
Mangalajodi (north shore). A marshy village near Tangi, about 70 km from Bhubaneswar, where community birding guides, many of them former bird hunters, pole flat-bottomed boats through reed channels at dawn. It is one of the best places in India to photograph waterbirds at close range from November to February.
For maps, boat information and conservation background, the Chilika Development Authority site is the official source.
The roads: NH16 to Barkul, or Puri to Satapada
Bhubaneswar to Barkul (about 100 km). The car heads south on NH16, the Kolkata-Chennai highway, through Khurda and past the Barunei hill. It is a fast four-lane road with tolls; after Tangi the lagoon starts to appear on the left, and by Balugaon you are driving along its western edge with the Eastern Ghats rising to the right. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours. The turning for Mangalajodi is near Tangi, about 70 km from Bhubaneswar, on a narrow village road for the last few kilometres.
Puri to Satapada (about 50 km). From Puri the road runs south-west along the sandbar between the sea and the lagoon, through Brahmagiri and fishing villages, to the jetty at Satapada. It is a two-lane road, slower in places, and takes about 1.5 hours. Combining it with a morning in Puri makes a relaxed day; our Puri by road guide covers that half.
Linking both sides. There is no bridge across the lagoon, so moving between Satapada and Barkul by car means going back round via Bhubaneswar's outskirts or Khurda, roughly 150 km. Some boat operators run crossings across the lagoon while your car drives round, but check timings in advance.

Best time for dolphins and birds
November to February is the prime season. Migratory birds arrive from late October and peak in December and January, when Nalabana and Mangalajodi hold tens of thousands of birds. The lagoon is calm, the air is cool, and dolphin sightings off Satapada are frequent in the mornings. March to May is warmer; birds depart, but dolphin trips continue and the light is good.
The monsoon (July to September) swells the rivers, freshens the water and brings rough weather; boat services may be restricted, and cyclone warnings in October or November occasionally suspend them for a few days. Always check with the local operator on the day. Kalijai's Makar Sankranti fair in mid-January is colourful but crowded at Barkul and Balugaon.
A small point of etiquette: dolphin boats should keep their distance and cut engines near a pod. Choose operators who follow the guidelines, even if it means waiting longer for a sighting. The state portal Odisha Tourism lists authorised facilities and seasonal advisories.

Two ways to plan the day
Birds and the island temple from Bhubaneswar (about 220 km). Leave at 5 am for Mangalajodi, reaching by 6.30 for a two-hour dawn boat ride among ducks, jacanas and herons. Breakfast at the village, then continue on NH16 to Barkul for a boat to Kalijai temple and, in winter, the Nalabana sanctuary. Late lunch of Chilika crab or prawn curry at Balugaon and back to Bhubaneswar by evening.
Dolphins and the sea mouth from Puri (about 110 km). Leave Puri at 7 am, reach Satapada by 8.30, and take a boat into the outer channels to watch for Irrawaddy dolphins, continuing to Rajhans island where the lagoon meets the sea. Return to Puri for a late lunch, or drive on to Konark along the marine drive.
For a longer Odisha trip, spend the night at Rambha and continue south, or loop back through Bhubaneswar for its temples.
Where to stay and who the lagoon suits
Most visitors see Chilika as a day trip, but a night on the shore changes the experience. Barkul has a long-established state tourism lodge right on the water, with boats leaving from its own jetty; Rambha has a smaller lodge overlooking the bay; and Satapada and the villages near Mangalajodi offer simple eco-stays and homestays run by local families. Staying over means you are on the water at first light without a pre-dawn drive, and you see the lagoon at sunset when the fishing boats come in.
The trip suits more people than you might expect. Birders and photographers come for Mangalajodi and Nalabana; families with children enjoy the dolphin boats and the sandbar beach at Rajhans; pilgrims visit Kalijai; and food lovers make the journey simply for crab and prawns cooked beside the water. Older travellers should know that boarding the boats involves a step down from a jetty or a short walk on sand, and there is little shade on the water, so the gentler Barkul and Kalijai trip is usually the best choice for them.
Practical tips for Chilika
- Start early: birds and dolphins are most active in the first hours after sunrise, and the lagoon is calmer.
- Binoculars and a long lens make a big difference; Mangalajodi guides often lend binoculars.
- Sun and wind: the open water is bright and breezy; wear a hat, sunglasses and a windproof layer in winter.
- Life jackets: insist on them for every boat trip, especially with children.
- Seafood: Chilika is famous for mud crab and tiger prawns; choose busy eateries at Balugaon or Satapada.
- Toilets and food are limited at Mangalajodi at dawn; carry water and snacks.
- Plastic: do not throw anything into the lagoon; it is a protected wetland and a livelihood for thousands.
- Agree boat terms first: confirm the route, duration and per-boat price at the counter before boarding, and ask whether Nalabana or Rajhans is included, because operators sell several different circuits from the same jetty.
- Network: mobile signal is weak on parts of the sandbar road and out on the water, so fix a meeting time and place with your driver before you set off.
Chilika is the calmest day of an Odisha holiday, and the one visitors most often wish they had given more time. For other wetland and wildlife drives across India, explore our tours by car.
