How long is the Jaipur to Jodhpur drive, and what will it cost?
Jodhpur is about 335 km west of Jaipur, usually around six hours by car via Kishangarh, Ajmer and Beawar. RutzIndia.com's chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 12,060 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 19,090 Pay Now to Reserve, excluding 5% GST; highway tolls and parking are passed on at cost. Inside Jodhpur, a full sightseeing day is Rs 6,840 Pay Now to Reserve.
Rao Jodha, a Rathore chief, moved his capital to a rocky hill on the edge of the Thar in 1459 and began building the fort that still dominates everything around it. The city that grew beneath Mehrangarh became Jodhpur, capital of Marwar, rich on the caravan trade between Delhi and Gujarat. Today its old quarter is famous for houses painted in shades of blue, its palace is one of the last great royal buildings of the twentieth century, and its markets are as lively as any in Rajasthan.
The drive from Jaipur crosses the heart of the state, from the marble belt around Kishangarh to the scrub and sand of western Rajasthan. With a chauffeur at the wheel you can watch the landscape change, stop for chai and mirchi vada, and arrive ready for a sunset on the fort walls. Below are the route options, what to see, when to go and how RutzIndia.com handles the trip.

Seeing Jodhpur: fort, palace and blue lanes
Mehrangarh
Few forts anywhere make an impression like Mehrangarh. Its walls rise sheer from the rock, and the approach winds through a series of gates, one of them still pocked, it is said, by cannonballs. Inside, the palace apartments hold superb collections of palanquins, howdahs, paintings, arms and textiles, and rooms such as the Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal are dazzling. The ramparts look straight down over the blue houses of Brahmpuri. The fort is run by a trust, and the Mehrangarh website lists opening hours, audio guides and events.
Jaswant Thada and the desert rock park
Just below the fort, Jaswant Thada is a white-marble cenotaph built at the end of the nineteenth century for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, glowing warm in the late afternoon. Beside it, the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park has restored the native vegetation of the rocky slopes, with easy walking trails and wonderful views of the fort.
Umaid Bhawan Palace
Completed in the 1940s, this vast Art Deco palace of golden sandstone was among the last great palaces built in India. Part of it is a luxury hotel, part is still the royal family's home, and one wing houses a museum with clocks, photographs and a collection of the family's classic cars on the lawn.
The old city
- Clock Tower and Sardar Market, the bustling centre of old Jodhpur, full of spices, textiles, bangles and antiques.
- Toorji ka Jhalra, an eighteenth-century stepwell restored to its full geometric glory, now surrounded by cafés.
- Brahmpuri's blue lanes, best explored on foot in the early morning with a local guide.
Beyond the city
- Mandore Gardens, 9 km north, with red-sandstone cenotaphs of earlier Marwar rulers.
- Kaylana Lake, a quiet sunset spot west of town.
- Bishnoi villages, south of the city, where communities famous for protecting wildlife and trees welcome visitors for village tours.
- Osian, about 65 km north, with some of Rajasthan's oldest temples and small sand dunes for a first taste of the desert.
Food
Jodhpur's mirchi vada, a green chilli stuffed with spiced potato and deep-fried, is legendary, as are pyaaz kachori, mawa kachori soaked in syrup, and thick makhaniya lassi. The Jodhpur district portal lists the main tourist places and local information.
The road from Jaipur, and from Udaipur
Jaipur to Jodhpur (about 335 km)
Most chauffeurs head west on NH48 to Kishangarh, then skirt Ajmer and continue south-west to Beawar, before turning west across the plains through Bar and Bilara into Jodhpur. The highway is good, with dhabas, fuel and a few tolls (passed on at cost). A northern alternative leaves the main road near Ajmer for Pushkar and Merta City, home of a temple associated with the poet-saint Mira Bai, and reaches Jodhpur from the north-east; it suits travellers who want a morning at Pushkar. Our Pushkar by road guide covers that stop.
Allow about six hours with a meal break. Summer afternoons are extremely hot on this stretch, so start early between April and June and keep water in the car.
Udaipur to Jodhpur via Ranakpur (about 260 km)
The finest way to arrive in Jodhpur is from Udaipur, climbing through the Aravallis to the white-marble Jain temple at Ranakpur, with its forest of carved pillars, and on through the hills before descending into Marwar. It is about six hours with the temple visit; see Udaipur by road for the other end.
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer
Most visitors continue west to Jaisalmer, about 285 km, typically five hours via Pokaran. That leg is covered in our Jaisalmer by road guide.
In town
Jodhpur's airport is only a few kilometres from the centre. The old city lanes around the Clock Tower are narrow; your driver drops you at the edge and waits at parking, and the road up to Mehrangarh has its own car park near the main gate.

When to visit Jodhpur
The comfortable season runs from October to March, with warm sunny days and cool desert nights. December and January nights can be genuinely cold, so pack a jacket. April to June is fierce, with temperatures that can exceed 45°C; if you travel then, plan sightseeing for early morning and evening. The short monsoon, July to September, brings occasional storms and green scrub.
Festivals and events:
- Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), held at Mehrangarh each October around Sharad Purnima, with musicians from across Rajasthan and the world.
- Marwar Festival, also around Sharad Purnima, celebrating the region's music and dance.
- Desert weddings from November to February, when the palaces and heritage hotels host grand celebrations and luxury cars are in demand.
- Diwali, when the old city and the fort are lit.

Tips from our Rajasthan chauffeurs
- Mehrangarh first thing. It opens early and is far more pleasant before 11 am.
- Heat management. From April to June, carry water, electrolyte sachets and a hat, and plan indoor museums for the afternoon.
- Old-city walking. The lanes are narrow and steep in places; wear comfortable shoes and let the driver meet you at an agreed point.
- Ask before photographing people and homes in Brahmpuri.
- Tickets. Mehrangarh, Umaid Bhawan's museum and Jaswant Thada each charge their own entry; check the official sites for current fees.
- Wedding traffic. On winter evenings, processions to palace venues can hold up the roads around Umaid Bhawan and Ratanada.
If Jodhpur is a wedding stop for you, our desk can meet guests at the airport, shuttle them between heritage hotels and have a decorated car ready for the couple. Speak to the travel desk.
